Another drop in North American foal numbers

THE Jockey Club of North America is projecting another dip in foal numbers for 2014, and has revised figures for the crops of 2012 and 2013 downwards.
It predicts a thoroughbred foal crop of 22,000 in North America next year and has adjusted figures for 2012 and 2013 to 23,500 and 23,000 respectively. The original projection was 24,700 foals for both those years.
The projection for 2014 is a decline of four per cent from the revised figure of 23,000 foals for 2013.
A stark picture of how the worldwide economic crash affected breeding is painted by the change in foal numbers in North America from 32,304 in 2009 to 23,500 in 2012 and 2013 - a 27 per cent drop.
To put the figures into perspective, in the same period foal registrations in Britian fell by 22 per cent from 5,595 in 2009 to 4,366 in 2012, while in Ireland they fell by 26 per cent from 10,167 in 2009 to 7,546 in 2012.
The Jockey Club of North America's foal crop projection is calculated by using reports of mares bred received for the 2013 breeding season.
The association's executive director Matt Iuliano said: "The revisions to the 2012 and 2013 foal crops are the result of receiving fewer reports after the August 1 reporting deadline of mares being bred."

Moonlight Cloud ist die ungekrönte Königin von Deauville

Es war das Gipfeltreffen der europäischen Meiler. Denn im Prix Jaques le Marois (Gruppe I, 600.000 Euro) traf sich in Deauville alles was auf dieser Distanz Rang und Namen hat. Genau im richtigen Moment trat dabei Moonlight Cloud mit Thierry Jarnet an und gewann damit das fünfte Gruppe I-Rennen ihrer so großartigen Laufbahn.

Dabei war es bereits der dritte Sieg hintereinander in diesem Jahr. Erst Anfang Juli gab die Stute von Freddy Head als Siegerin in Longchamp in einem Gruppe III-Rennen gegen Stall Nizzas Amarillo ein begeisterndes Jahresdebüt.

Nur eine Woche zuvor gewann Moonlight Cloud auf höchster Ebene den Prix Maurice de Gheest über kurze 1300 Meter gegen Lethal Force und nun auch gegen die Meilenkracher wieder in Deauville.

Somit avancierte Moonlight Cloud zur ungekrönten Königin des französischen Seebades. Allerdings hätte ihr beinahe Frankie Dettori einen dicken Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht, denn der Riesenaußenseiter Olympic Glory kam mit großen Schritten heran, aber nicht mehr vorbei. Rang drei ging an den Arc-Mitfavoriten Intello von Andre Fabre.

Einen schweren Dämpfer mussten auch die Anhänger des Godolphin-Flaggschiffes Dawn Approach miterleben, der nur Fünfter wurde. Noch schlechter erging es der Super-Stute Elusive Kate, die auf Rang sieben einkam

Tattersalls Ireland to host yearling show

TATTERSALLS IRELAND has announced that they will be hosting a National Hunt yearling show in conjunction with the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association, on Sunday, November 10. The day before the November National Hunt sale.
The show will feature an individual colts and geldings class as well as a fillies class with a prize fund of €12,000.
The November National Hunt sale has sourced an impressive number of top-class winners, including Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Bobs Worth and exciting novice chaser Mount Benbulben.
Speaking about the new venture, Tattersalls Ireland managing director Roger Casey said: "The National Hunt Yearling Show is the perfect opportunity for vendors to promote the quality of potential racehorses on offer in the yearling section of the November National Hunt catalogue. We are delighted the ITBA have come on board to support this."
Shane O'Dwyer, manager of the ITBA, said: "The ITBA are delighted to be involved with the inaugural National Hunt Yearling Show at Tattersalls Ireland.
"The show will add another dimension to the November National Hunt sale and will encourage breeders to keep producing stock of the highest standard.
"The ITBA continues to support new initiatives within the bloodstock industry and we are delighted to be involved in this new concept."

Antibiotics for Approach after Marois failure

DAWN APPROACH began a course of antibiotics on Monday following his below-par performance in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Sunday when he finished fifth, eight lengths behind the winner Moonlight Cloud.
Jim Bolger, who had earlier suggested his 2,000 Guineas would be rested before a tilt at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on October 19, said: "Dawn Approach arrived home from France this morning. We scoped him and found some mucus in his lungs.

"He's on a course of antibiotics and is going to have to have a break. The plan is to have him right and ready to run in the QE II."

Another pair of Irish stars with Ascot on their radars are Rite of Passage and Sapphire, who provided their trainer Dermot Weld with a memorable double on Champions Day last year.
Rite Of Passage, who has not raced since returning from a 510 day absence to land the Long Distance Cup last year, missed out on the Ascot Gold Cup in June due to fast ground.
Speaking on Monday, Weld said: "Rite Of Passage is in good order although, as always because of his history of leg problems, it is a day-to-day process with him.
"There are no definite plans just yet but the races we'll be considering for him are the Irish St Leger and/or the Prix du Cadran with the Long Distance Cup another possible target. However, the Irish St Leger Trial at the Curragh will probably come a bit too soon for him."
Weld also revealed Sapphire, who took the Group 2 Qipco British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes, is on target to tackle that same event again.
"She was held up this year because of a training setback but we're hoping to have her back before the end of the season. If all goes well, we'd like to send her back for the Ascot race which is now a Group 1. She is a mare who relishes soft ground," he said.

Hofer-Crack Pastorius ist nach Verletzung außer Gefecht

Großes Pech für den Stall Antanando von Besitzer Franz Prinz von Auersperg und seinen Trainer Mario Hofer. Ihr Crack Pastorius (Foto), dreifacher Gruppe I-Sieger, und als Starter für den Großen Preis von Baden vorgesehen, zog sich am Montagmorgen im Training eine Verletzung zu, und kann deshalb nicht im Großen Preis von Baden starten.

Der vierjährige Soldier Hollow-Sohn zog sich bei der Traininsgarbeit mit seinem Halbbruder Point Blank eine Fissur am rechten Vorderbein zu und muss längere Zeit pausieren.

Das Bein des letztjährigen Derbysiegers, der in dieser Saison den Prix Ganay in Longchamp gewann, wurde bereits eingegipst. Das postete Pastorius-Besitzer Franz Prinz von Auersperg am Montagmittag auf der von ihm eingerichteten Facebook-Seite von Pastorius.

Schade natürlich, dass es somit im Großen Preis von Baden in Iffezheim nicht zum erneuten Aufeinandertreffen der beiden besten deutschen Pferde kommen wird.

Trainer Mario Hofer, der seine Pferde aktuell in sensationeller Form hat, musste an seinem 57. Geburtstag, den er am Montag feierte, also eine Hiobsbotschaft hinnehmen.

"Es passierte bei einem Spritzer mit Point Blank heute morgen. Im Anschluss ging Pastorius lahm, woraufhin wir natürlich sofort den Tierarzt benachrichtigten. Pastorius wurde geröntgt, er hat eine Fissur vorne rechts.

Das Bein wurde eingegipst, nun muss man abwarten, was passiert. In sechs Wochen wird kontrolliert, wie es aussieht, danach kann man sagen, wie es mit ihm weiter geht.

Sollte alles optimal laufen, dann werden wir ihn auch in der Saison 2014 im Training lassen. Wenn es nicht so ist, dann müssen wir für ihn einen Platz als Deckhengst finden", erklärte Trainer Mario Hofer am Telefon gegenüber der Sport-Welt. (12.08.2013)
