So You Think has first foal on the ground

By Bloodstock World Staff 11:50AM 25 JUL 2013
THE first foal by ten-time Group 1 winner So You Think was born on Thursday, July 25, at Bell View Park in Australia according to a tweet posted by Coolmore Stud.
On Thursday morning Coolmore tweeted: "First reported foal by Champion So You Think born at Bell View Park, described as "a lovely colt" (ex Soft Landing, a ½ sister to 2 G1 winners)."
The colt is out of the Al Maher mare Soft Landing, a maiden on the racecourse, who is a half-sister to five winners, including four time Group 1 winner Universal Prince and top-class filly Universal Queen.
Further back, it is the family of Great Voltigeur winner Meadowville.
So You Think, a son of High Chaparral, was trained in Australia by Bart Cummings to win five Group 1s and finished a gallant third on his last start down under in the Melbourne Cup.
In November 2010 the Coolmore partners bought a majority share in the imposing colt and he went on to establish himself as one of Europe's leading performers, capturing five Group 1 races for Aidan O'Brien including the Prince Of Wales's Stakes on his last start in 2012.
So You Think was well received by Australian breeders during his first stint down under in New South Wales and had 145 mares scanned in foal.

            • St Nicholas Abbey hit by major colic setback

              By Mark Scully 1:25PM 26 JUL 2013
ST NICHOLAS ABBEY has suffered a "major setback" in his recovery from surgery that Coolmore hope will save him for a stud career.
The colt suffered a life-threatening fractured pastern on Monday while preparing for Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and underwent a major procedure at John Halley's Fethard Equine Hospital.
Updates from Coolmore throughout the week had been positive but on Friday afternoon they revealed the six-year-old had suffered with bad colic during Thursday night.
A statement released via their Twitter feed, @coolmorestud, said: "Unfortunately St Nicholas Abbey had a major setback in his recovery during the night, suffering from a bad colic.
"He underwent emergency colic surgery at Fethard Equine Hospital this morning and the prognosis is very guarded at the moment."
Trained by Aidan O'Brien for Derrick Smith, John Magnier and Michael Tabor, St Nicholas Abbey had won both his starts this year - landing the Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup Night at Meydan, then following up in the Coronation Cup on Derby day, a race he was winning for a record-breaking third time.
Victory in Saturday's race would have been a seventh at Group 1 level for St Nicholas Abbey, who amassed nearly £5 million in total prize-money as Britain and Ireland's all-time leading money-earner, winning nine of his 21 starts.

              • Successful Sire Unbridled's Song Dies at 20

The rare horse who made headlines in the sales ring, on the track, and as a stallion, Unbridled's Song died July 26 in Lexington at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital.

Unbridled's Song, 20, had completed his 17th season at Taylor Made Stallions in Nicholasville, Ky. where he stood for $60,000. Like him, many of his progeny have made headlines in the sales ring, on the track, and as stallions or broodmares.

"Unbridled's Song was majestic from the beginning. Rarely are there horses that are supposed to be great from the beginning and actually are," said Taylor Made president Duncan Taylor. "Unbridled's Song was one of those great horses. He had it all—looks, pedigree, speed, and presence. "Our team loved him from the beginning. I appreciate and am proud of the job our team did with the management of this magnificent horse. I would also like to thank the breeders and owners who supported and helped him become a great stallion."

Unbridled's Song was euthanized after a rapid decline in his health as a result of a large mass present in multiple sinus cavities and around the optic nerves. He began exhibiting acute neurological signs Thursday morning, July 25th, and was transported to Rood and Riddle. Based on the results on an MRI, it was determined the mass was invasive and aggressive in nature and deemed inoperable.

Unbridled's Song burst on the scene in 1995 when he sold for $1.4 million at the Barretts March sale, a world-record price for a horse at a 2-year-olds in training sale. But buyer Hiroshi Fujita would back out of the sale because he said his veterinarian detected a bone chip in the colt's left front ankle. Seller Ernie Pargallo and consignor Taylor Made would dispute that diagnosis, but Paragallo also would say he welcomed the opportunity to race the promising son of 1990 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Unbridled.

Paragallo, working with bloodstock agent Buzz Chace, landed Unbridled's Song for $200,000 at the 1994 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August yearling select sale.

On the track, Unbridled's Song would quickly deliver, winning the 1995 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Belmont Park. He would continue that success at 3, winning the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) before finishing fifth in the Kentucky Derby, where he raced with a sore left front foot.

Trained by Jim Ryerson for most of his career, he then finished second in the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park and skipped the final two Triple Crown legs. Unbridled's Song made his final two career starts for trainer Nick Zito, going out with a victory in the 1997 Olympic Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

That race was supposed to serve as a prep for the Donn Handicap (gr. I) but Unbridled's Song suffered a career-ending injury training for the Donn.
Bred in Kentucky by Mandysland Farm, Unbridled Song was out of the Caro mare Trolley Song. He retired with a record of 5-4-0 from 12 starts and earnings of $1,311,800.

His next career move would prove just as successful when he joined Taylor Made as a stallion. He is the sire of champions Midshipman , 2008 champion 2-year-old colt, and Embur's Song, Canada's 2011 champion older mare. His Breeders' Cup successes include Ladies' Classic (gr. I) winners Unrivaled Belle and Unbridled Elaine.

From 14 crops to race to date, Unbridled's Song has sired 730 winners from just over 1,000 lifetime starters, with nearly $90 million in career progeny earnings.

While Unbridled's Song failed to make the Donn, his son Graydar won this year's edition of the Gulfstream Park race to become Unbridled's Song's 100th stakes winner. After the milestone, reached by only 26 other North American-based stallions, Taylor Made Stallions vice president Ben Taylor talked about the stallion's career.

"Unbridled's Song has been such a great sire, and our entire team at Taylor Made could not be more proud of him for accomplishing such a landmark of 100 stakes winners for a sire," said Ben Taylor, vice president of Taylor Made Stallions. "I want to thank all of the breeders, owners, trainers, and all other horsemen who have shared a hand in Unbridled's Song's success."

In the sales ring, Unbridled's Song has had 26 yearlings surpass $1 million from his first 14 crops. Sons of Unbridled's Song at stud already include sires of grade I winners in Even the Score and First Defence , and his daughters have ranked him among the top broodmare sires, having produced many grade or group I winners internationally.

First foal by Coolmore's So You Think on show

By Bloodstock World Staff 1:05PM 26 JUL 2013
The official start to the Australian breeding season may be a few days away, but the first foal by So You Think couldn't wait to make his arrival.
Born at 4pm on Thursday, July 25, the colt is out of the Al Maher mare Soft Landing, a half-sister to Group 1 winners Universal Prince and Universal Queen.
Pictured here in the New South Wales sun, the son of ten-time Group 1 winner So You Think is bred by Bell View Park Stud and Dr Michael Alexeeff.
Bell View Park Stud's business manager Adam Mackrell said: "The colt is a nice leggy, dark coloured foal with plenty of size and quality. He is in the same mould as So You Think himself.
"His birth weight was 58.5kg, which is a very good size considering he was a couple of weeks early.
"We are very happy with the foal and it is a positive start for So You Think as a sire."
Soft Landing also has a yearling filly by High Chaparral - making her a three-parts sister to Thursday's addition - and a soon-to-be yearling colt by More Than Ready.

Blue Fashion (4g Scorpion-Moon Glow, by Solar One) scored by six lengths at Auteuil on Sunday when becoming the latest smart first-crop representative for the high-class Scorpion.
The four-year-old was saddled by Francois Cottin to comfortably land a 2m 2f conditions’ hurdle at the Paris track to complete a red-letter week for his breeder Paul Nataf. Leading 2,000 Guineas contender Toronado (3c High Chaparral-Wana Doo, by Grand Slam), winner of the G3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday, was also bred by Nataf.
Scorpion has made a big impression with only a handful of runners so far and one that went into many notebooks was the Ronnie O’Leary-trained Deadly Sting (4g Scorpion-Gaza Strip, by Hamas), who flew at the finish to just lose out in a Wetherby bumper on April 12.
The Racing Post’s Analysis noted that Deadly Sting “would have got up in another couple of strides. He showed sings of greenness when initially coming under pressure and should improve plenty”. He was subsequently sold for £52,000 at the Cheltenham sale on Wednesday and has joined Jonjo O’Neill.

"Like me, Laura is a "Bereiter", or licensed riding instructor. Laura did her three-year apprenticeship with Rudolf Zeilinger in Emsbueren. I had already finished my apprenticeship with Paul Beck and my exam in Warendorf and was working for Rudolf Zeilinger as a rider when Laura came to start as an apprentice. We lived and worked together for about two years before I made the move to Australia .

After Laura finished her exam in Warendorf, she moved to Sweden for three years to work for Jan Brink .

Now she runs her own training business near Duesseldorf as well as works for a family that she rides for and trains their daughter, Lena Walterscheid, who is a very successful Young Rider in Germany.
