As Valegro and Charlotte Dujardin delighted the crowds at Olympia, defending their titles and breaking another world record in the process, work was going on behind the scenes to try to keep the horse in British hands.


Owners Carl Hester and Roly Luard are seeking to form a syndicate to buy 49% of the 10-year-old Negro gelding.

They want to raise £2.5million by 31 January.
In a letter, sent to a few select friends and contacts, Mrs Luard said large sums had been offered from other European countries...."

To some, it might seem strange that Simonsig's sire Fair Mix was aimed at the National Hunt market right from the outset of his stud career. He was a top-class Flat horse who would surely have proved a useful Flat stallion if given any chance to do so. However, when one sees horses of the calibre of Fame And Glory (a Group One-winning two-year-old who landed the Irish Derby at three after finishing second to Sea The Stars in the Derby, before winning the Coronation Cup at four and the Ascot Gold Cup at five) being shunted straight off to Coolmore's National Hunt division, one is reminded of the extent to which the Flat stallion market has become cornered by obvious 'commercial' types - whatever that means. Under the circumstances, it was unsurprising that Fair Mix wasn't given the thumbs up by the commercial Flat studs: he didn’t win a stakes race until he was four, while he recorded his most prestigious victory as a five-year-old over 2100m and his most valuable as a six-year-old over 2400m. If there is a common denominator amongst the stallions who are deemed to be 'commercial' (at the outset of their careers, at any rate, even if they don't remain commercial for long) it is that they were precocious racehorses who had showed good form over fairly short distances - and Fair Mix clearly did not fall into that category at all...."

Eine grossrahmige Schimmel Stute von KRONZEUGE - etwas lang im Kopf ,lange Ohren,gute Gliedmassen - vorne ,wie hinten - ganz leicht den XX-Stuten Hals ,aber immer noch in Ordnung,aber 3 sehr gute Grund-Gangarten,so dass mich Dressur-reiter immer wieder fragten : "Die ist : Halbblut - nicht Vollblut ?"

Wie klein die pferdewelt ist ,zeigte sich etwa 25 Jahre spaeter wieder einmal.

Als ich die CONSUL Stute CLOTHILDE 1999 kaufte,forschte ich natuerlich ueber ihr Pedigree,da stellte sich heraus,dass der westfaelische Halbblut-Hengst : BENGALE v.BEN SHIRIN eben aus ihrem Stamm kam.

Racing Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens gave official confirmation Thursday to the rumors that have been flying since he started getting back on thoroughbreds eight weeks ago -- on Sunday at Santa Anita Park, he'll again start riding races.
"I want to give it a go again," Stevens said on HRTV, the racing television network for which he has served as an analyst since 2008. "There's been a lot of speculation, and I'm coming back on Sunday."
Stevens, who will turn 50 on March 6, has the call on R and R Warren's Jebrica, a 5-year-old Washington-bred Liberty Gold gelding. Trainer Jim Penney will send Jebrica and Stevens out in Race 6 on the Jan. 6 card, a $45,000 claiming event for 4-year-olds and upward going a mile on the turf. The duo breaks from post three.

Stevens prepped for his comeback at the Pro Sports Club's 20/20 lifestyles program in Bellevue, Wa.
"I haven't felt this way since probably five years before I retired," said the jockey, who suffered chronic knee pain and hung up his tack in 2005. "What I'm doing in the gym every day and on horseback every day gives me a pretty good indication that I'm good for quite a while."
Stevens will continue to serve as an analyst for HRTV and with NBC Sports while he rides races, but he plans to selectively pursue mounts. He has not named an agent to manage his book, but said, "I've talked to some people, and you should hear something in the next couple days."
A three-time winner of both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes and a two-time Preakness winner, Stevens also counts eight Breeders' Cup scores among his 4,888 wins to date. A native of Caldwell, Idaho, he began his career in 1979 at Les Bois Park and was a leading rider in Washington before moving to California and establishing his name on the South Cal circuit.
