Das freut mich schon ungemein einmal fuer die Christiane,dann fuer Karl-August als Zuechter und aber natuerlich auch ,dass ich die Mutter gezogen habe,und auch ihre Grossmutter - also die Ur-Grossmutter des Hengstes - in der Zucht hatte.

Of this year's first-crop stallions to make strong impressions with their sales horses, three-time champion Gio Ponti is a definite standout.

The 9-year-old son of Tale of the Cat —Chipeta Springs, by Alydar, has the highest-priced yearling in North America among his peers thus far in 2014. The three-quarter sister to 2013 champion juvenile filly She's a Tiger was secured for Darley for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale in August, but Gio Ponti had already distinguished himself in the auction market.

Gio Ponti had the top-priced yearling among first-crop sires at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale—a $200,000 colt out of To the Brim, by Ascot Knight—after closing 2013 ranked second among leading first-crop weanling sires, with a $125,778 average. His overall median of $120,000, however, was highest at both the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky and Keeneland November sales, marking a superb return for the breeders who supported him in his first season at stud, when he stood for $20,000.

Standing at Castleton Lyons near Lexington, Gio Ponti has 111 yearlings in his first crop, 58 of which are cataloged for the Keeneland September sale including 11 in the elite Book 1. Their presence culminates months of the buzz about the stallion that began with breeders when Gio Ponti retired in 2011 and ratcheted up when his first foals hit the ground last year.

"They're very like daddy," Stuart Fitzgibbon, commercial manager at Castleton Lyons, said about the offspring of their homebred Gio Ponti, who was champion turf male in 2009 and 2010 and champion older male of 2009. "They all have his shape, they all have his walk—a very agile, very athletic, very fluid walk. They've got great presence. They're tall and leggy."

Fitzgibbon said he expects Gio Ponti's offspring will need just a little bit of time before making their first starts later in their 2-year-old year.

"Gio Ponti ran three times himself as a 2-year-old," he said. "His first race was in September. I'd imagine it's gong to be around then and I don't expect them to be too quick off the mark for Keeneland, Churchill, or Saratoga. I'm sure there will be a few all right, a few look pretty fast, but I'd expect them to develop into later 2-year-olds."

Castleton Lyons has thrown their support behind their young stallion.

"We breed 15 to 20 mares to him every year. We've got a lot of Gio Pontis on the farm. We've also bought Gio Ponti foals. We bought mares in foal to Gio Ponti at the sales, and we bought a yearling by him at the New York-bred sale at Saratoga—we gave $150,000 for him (a colt out of Shoo In, by Dynaformer). So we've got plenty of experience with them."

Castleton Lyons will offer Gio Ponti's yearlings at Keeneland September via Paramount Sales in Books 1, 2, and 3.

"It's nice for us to showcase the horse by selling some," Fitzgibbon said.

Among the Paramount consignment in Book 1 is a colt who is the first foal out of the Distorted Humor mare Blageuse, a half sister to 2003 champion 2-year-old filly Halfbridled.

Among other Book 1 consignors, Penn Sales will offer a colt out of the Zafonic mare Street Scene, the dam of 2008 Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes (Ire-I) runner-up Traffic Guard (More Than Ready ), from the family of U.S. multiple grade I winner Erins Isle (IRE); and Peter O'Callaghan's Woods Edge Farm, will offer as agent a colt out of the Ghostzapper mare Eltimaas, a half sister to 2003 champion 2-year-old male Action This Day.

Trained by Christophe Clement, Gio Ponti posted a 12-10-1 record from 29 career starts racing five seasons, from ages 2-6, and earned $6,169,800. He started 19 times in grade I races and won or placed in 15, scoring seven victories at the top level including the Shadwell Turf Mile (2010 and 2011), the 2009 Frank E. Kilroe Mile, Arlington Million, and Manhattan at 1 1/4 miles, and two editions of the Man o' War (2009 and 2010) at 1 3/8 miles. He was second Zenyatta in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) and runner-up to Goldikova in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT).

"So many breeders we spoke to while the horse was in training said that when he retires they were going to breed to him," Ftizgibbon said. "When he did retire, those breeders came out and had a look at him again on the farm and they all bred to him.

"He bred 148 mares (in 2012); his book was full by Christmas. He bred 113 the next year and we bred 154 mares (in 2014); that's unheard of. The great momentum of the horse when he retired—that carried through once the first group of foals went to the sales last year."

As for Gio Ponti's market appeal, Fitzgibbon said that when the horse went to stud he was aware that he may be pigeonholed as a turf sire.

"There's probably no problem with that if you look at the likes of Kitten's Joy , whose very, very successful," he said......"

Er hat auch auf Gras gewonnen ,war auch mal 2.ueber 2400m und ueber 2200m gewonnen - das ist ja schon ein gewaltiger Steher in USA.

Vielleicht lernen sie jetzt endlichetwas dazu !
