With the number of horses cataloged reduced significantly by Keeneland officials and the two select sessions Sept. 12-13 switched from daytime to nighttime, the average price and median price rose 31.8% and 32.6%, respectively, from a year ago. In addition, the buy-back rate fell to 31.4% from 38.2% in 2009 and on the opening night, an A.P. Indy – Balance colt brought $4.2 million, the highest price for the auction since Meydan City sold for $11.7 million in 2006.
“It may be the format, and it may be something else, but I think the market has been solid,” Goodman said Sept. 13.

“It’s awesome.”

The 127 horses that were sold during the two select sessions represented a 45% decline from a year ago when the total was 222. But their gross of $44,305,000 was down much less sharply, falling 24.6% from 2009’s comparable figure of $58,756,000. Two yearlings brought seven-figure prices, down from three last year.
Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed, didn’t attend the select sessions, and his bloodstock manager, John Ferguson, purchased only two horses after buying 31 yearlings and spending $13,460,000 in 2009. But a host of foreign and domestic shoppers poured into the Keeneland sale pavilion and filled the void.
Another member of Dubai’s ruling family, Sheikh Hamdan, was at the September auction for the first time in several years, and he was the select sessions’ biggest spender, paying $5,110,000 for 12 yearlings. South Florida healthcare magnate Benjamin Leon Jr., attending his first Thoroughbred sale, ranked second, spending $5,060,000 for three head in the name of his Besilu Stables.

A bay ridgling by Smart Strike commanded the initial seven-figure price during the Sept. 14 session of the Keeneland September yearling sale when he was bought for $1,000,000 by George Bolton. Out of the grade III-winning Seattle Slew mare Ask Me No Secrets, he was consigned by Greenfield Farm for B.D. Gibbs Farm, agent.

The last Storm Cat offspring to ever sell at auction brought $285,000 from the Toronto, Canada-based Chiefswood Farm at the second select session of the Keeneland September yearling sale Sept. 13.
The second foal out of the stakes-placed Gone West mare Western Princess, the dark bay or brown filly was consigned by Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud, agent.
“She’s by one of the best sires in the world,” noted Mark Krembil, who operates Chiefswood with his father, Robert. The filly, who was bred in Kentucky by Earl Mack, is the third Storm Cat offspring to be owned by Chiefswood. “(The motivation to buy this filly) was mostly because she looks like she has lot of athletic ability and because of Storm Cat’s value—his pedigree has a lot of value to it,” said Krembil.
Chiefswood has campaigned several other stakes winners over the years, including 2010 graded stakes winner Aurora Lights; Ambitious Cat (also by Storm Cat), who won a 2005 Sovereign Award winner as Canada's top female turf horse; and Niigon, winner of the 2004 Queen’s Plate.
Two-time leading sire Storm Cat, who was pensioned in 2008, stood his stellar career at the Young family’s Overbrook Farm near Lexington. Since last fall, the operation has dispersed all its yearlings, breeding stock, and the majority of its horses in training.

A strapping son of Distorted Humor was hammered down for $2,050,000 during the Sept. 13 session of the Keeneland September yearling sale. Bought by agent Mike Ryan on behalf of a new, undisclosed client based overseas, the colt was consigned by Lane’s End, agent.
Ryan said it was undecided whether the colt, who is the third foal out of the unraced Storm Cat mare Angel’s Nest, will start his training in the United States or overseas, where his new owner is located.
“The pedigree speaks for itself…he’s the complete package,” said Ryan of the colt, whose dam is a daughter of European and United States champion Miesque, and a half sister to European champion East of the Moon and group I winner and prominent sire Kingmambo .
“If (the Distorted Humor colt) is as good on the racetrack as we think he could be…the sky is the limit,” said Ryan. “He’s an outstanding physical, and has a pedigree that matches. He’s the complete package.
“The price was in the range (we were expecting). He’s a top horse,” Ryan added of the colt, who was bred in Kentucky by Flaxman Holdings.

North American foal statistics announced

THE North American Jockey Club has reported that 3,130 stallions covered 49,404 mares in North America during 2009, according to statistics compiled up until September 8 this year.
These matings have resulted in 27,233 live foals being reported to the Jockey Club on Live Foal Reports received as of September 8.

The reporting of live foals this year is down 14.2 per cent compared to at this point last year, when The Jockey Club had received 31,727 reports of live foals.

Medaglia d'Oro, sire of last year's champion three-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra, ishas the largest number of live foals this year, with 163. His produce result from the covering of 205 mares, hence a live-foal rate of 80 per cent.
The estimated final tally of 30,000 would be the fewest in a foal crop since the 28,809 in 1976.The registered foal crop projection takes into account that not all live foals become registered.
In addition to the 27,233 live foals of 2010 reported up until September 8, The Jockey Club had also received 5,138 No Foal Reports for the 2010 foaling season

(As a follow-up to Secretariat, I am posting this rather lengthy blog on Seattle Slew, combining several features I’ve written over the years to form one comprehensive story)
It was nine o’clock in the morning on May 7, 2002—25 years to the day since Seattle Slew’s historic victory in the Kentucky Derby. The great Thoroughbred gave one final look at his devoted owners, Karen and Mickey Taylor, who, as usual, were by his side, and with his eyes, he let them know, as the Sioux warriors would say before going to battle, “It is a good day to die.”

...zumindest ein deutlicher Impuls , da auch Medianpreis und andere Parameter positiv ausfielen , obwohl einige der " Big Spender " nicht vor Ort waren . Im oberen Bereich - select sales !!! läßt die Kaufzurückhaltung nach . Immerhin haben auch hochpreisige Limousinen made in Germany inzwischen wieder lange Wartezeiten bei der Auslieferung .
In den USA gab es schon vor der Krise einen leichten Rückgang http://www.jockeyclub.com/factbook.asp?section=2 , 2010 dürfte es überall den stärksten Rückgang an Fohlenregistrierungen geben , was aber angesichts immer noch vorhandener Probleme Internet-Wetten/Finanzierung Rennbahn auch in den USA durchaus von Vorteil sein könnte.
Die breite Masse EU ( die kopfstarken IRE-Jahrgänge 2008 gedeckt (vor der Krise) kommen jetzt auf den Markt ?! ) und die Käufer kommen weniger aus dem Osten , ...eher aus Indien ?! Importbeschränkungen wurden ja gelockert .
Die BBAG sollte vielleicht mal in Indien etwas mehr Werbung machen : Jaqueline !

Quijano könnte diesmal gegen Night Magic den Spieß umdrehen und einen tollen Schlussakkord seiner Karriere setzen .
Night Magic zeigte die letzten 2 Starts tolle Form , siegte leicht im Gr.Preis von Baden - Baden .Wenn sie das Rennen gut weggesteckt hat , sicherlich ein heißes Eisen.
Scalo mag eher die 2000 m Rennen .
Wiener Walzer mußte im Juli in Hamburg Campanologist den Sieg überlassen , der eine Nennung für die Champion-Stakes Gr.1 13.10.hat .Die Kölner Bahn kennt er auch als Sieger über 2400m und vielleicht kann er die Scharte von Bad-Bad auswetzen .
