  • Teofilo leading freshman once again

Tattersalls October Book 1 ends with encouraging figures for first-season sire
The three-day elite sale at Tattersalls ended on Thursday with 19 of the 20 Teofilo (pictured) yearlings offered selling for an average of 116,211gns to make their sire top of the freshmen at this year’s sales yet again.
The star among the Teofilo debutants was Hawthorn Villa Stud’s filly full-sister to Group Three winner Puncher Clynch out of Dance Troupe, who was purchased by Charlie Gordon-Watson for 260,000gns.
Whitsbury Manor Stud consigned a colt out of See You Later from the family of Peak To Creek and Ripples Maid, who sold for 220,000gns, while a bay filly out of Caumshinaun, the dam of Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Nightime, sold for 200,000gns. She was one of two yearlings to realise that price, the other being Hascombe & Valiant Studs’ son of Miss Penton, who has already produced the Royal Lodge Stakes winner Leo.
Three Darley stallions posted higher averages than Teofilo, with King’s Best, sire of Derby and Arc winner Workforce, responsible for three yearlings changing hands at an average of 130,000gns. Top price of these was the full-sister to Group One winner King’s Apostle, who heads to Japan after being bought for 300,000gns. She was selected by Eishin Farms, who race King’s Best’s Japanese Derby winner Eishin Flash.
Leading second-crop sire Dubawi had seven yearlings knocked down for an average price of 129,429gns, with four of them fetching six-figure sums. Top price was paid for Lynn Lodge Stud’s son of Ribot’s Guest, who is also the dam of Prix de l’Opera winner Kinnaird. Her yearling was bought by South Africa’s Form Bloodstock for 360,000gns.
Three yearlings by Royal Applause also recorded a six-figure average, of 123,333gns, with Shadwell Estate Company opting for the first foal of the Listed winner Blue Echo, consigned by Kirtlington Stud and purchased for 240,000gns.
Shamardal had a whopping 21 yearlings sold through the three days for an average of 66,095gns. No fewer than five sold for 100,000gns or more, with the top price of 140,000gns being paid for The Castlebridge Consignment’s colt out of the Barathea mare Jalousie.
Members of Authorized’s first crop averaged more than double their sire’s first-season fee, with 18 selling for an average of 63,333gns. Once again there were a number of six-figure sales, including Lavington Stud’s colt out of Circle Of Love, who fetched 170,000gns, and another colt out of North East Bay, who gave Castlebridge yet another good return when selling for 130,000gns.
Book 2 of the Tattersalls October sale starts on Monday.

A blog about Thoroughbred racing and whatever else I feel like writing about

        Ladies and gentlemen

England's champion older filly Sariska refused to leave the starting gate today in the Yorkshire Oaks. Despite jockey Jamie Spencer's frantic urging, the magnificently made four-year-old daughter of Pivotal out of Maycocks Bay, by Muhtarram, stood almost motionless in her stall as the rest of the field raced away across the Knavesmire.

Refusal to race has become a rarity since mechanical starting gates became universal virtually the world over in the 1960s. The most recent comparable incident I can think of in a major race is, of course, Quality Road's refusal to enter the starting gate before the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic. Refusal to enter the gate and refusal to leave it are, of course, quite different problems for a trainer. Todd Pletcher has done a wonderful job helping Quality Road get over the panic attacks that caused him to lash out dangerously before the Breeders' Cup and then refuse to get on a plane a few days later.

          • Andrew Caulfield Examines G1 Champion hero Twice Over
            Posted: 7:38 PM ET

As mentioned in Sunday's TDN report on Twice Over's repeat victory in the Emirates Airline Champion S., 2010 is proving the most successful campaign for Juddmonte Farms since 2003. With a current total of 16 Grade 1/Group 1 victories, Prince Khalid is only two short of his total of 18 in 2003, when he was leading owner both in Britain and France and earned the breeder's Eclipse Award for a third consecutive year.
An interesting aspect of his success in each of these bumper years is the part played by Juddmonte's former stallion Distant View, who was pensioned at the age of 15 in 2006. His contribution in 2003 came via his magnificent daughter Sightseek, who gained the first four of her seven Grade I successes, only to lose out to Azeri for the older mare Eclipse Award...complete story in Tuesday's TDN..

                  kommt zum Fährhof...
Der bislang im Dalham Hall Stud stationierte
                  Tiger
                  Hill
Zweiter.

It's Gino (Perugino) wieder ein Deckhengst

In jedem Fall kommen

TEAM VALOR GERMAN YEARLING BUY WINS SCOOT STAKES ON THE SOD,
GRAHAM MOTION TURNS MARE AROUND AT FAIR HILL TRAINING CENTER
Team Valor International’s Daveron blasted to a 3-length victory today at Belmont Park in 1 ¼-mile Scoot Stakes.
The 5-year-old German import was reunited today with Eddie Castro, who had guided her to a debut win over the Belmont course earlier in the spring in her only prior score in the United States.
The chestnut was making only her second start for Graham Motion, who took over in the fall.
Daveron ran 2:05 on turf that was labeled "good" and flew home from off the pace to shade 23 seconds for the final quarter mile.
Barry Irwin, who bought Daveron as a yearling at the BBAG National Yearling Sale in Germany, said "We sent her to Graham because we thought she would thrive at Fair Hill, as it is more of a European style setting that she was used to in Germany. She can be quite high strung and we hoped that the peaceful, serene country-like setting would help to relax her."
When Daveron stripped for action in the paddock at Belmont Park today, it was at once apparent that Fair Hill and Graham Motion had combined to do their magic, as the mare looked to have gained a considerable amount of condition. "Geez, that’s the first time I ever noticed that she actually had a hip," joked Irwin. "It was a wonderful sight to see."
Daveron broke running, but was gradually eased back to race in fifth by Castro, who is the only rider to have succeeded in getting her to relax in her races. Castro "buried" the mare and made no move to un-box himself until he turned for home. "Eddie knows the mare and experienced her terrific turn of foot, so he never went into panic mode," Irwin noted. "I have to admit I enjoyed every second that she was under cover. Brilliant ride!"
Once she had room inside the lane, Daveron took hold of the bit and moved to second, a length back, at the furlong grounds. When Castro switched the stick to his right hand, the mare exploded and quickly put 3 lengths between herself and the field to win easily. A stakes winner in Germany and the United States who has been first (4) or second (2) in half of her 12 outings, the earner of $127,654 will continue to race as a 6-year-for for TVI.
The Scoot was stakes victory number 12 for a Team Valor International runner in 2010.

DAVERON HAILS FROM A FAMILY LOADED WITH FEMALE CHAMPIONS

Barry Irwin worked the BBAG (Baden-Baden Auction Germany) annual national yearling sale, looking at each of the fillies in the 300-strong catalogue.

Daveron going through the BBAG Sales last Friday.
                          (Click photo to enlarge)
Team Valor’s president, using his patented method for prospecting nuggets from these venues, came up with a short list of 4 possibilities. After a final inspection, the list was cut in half and Irwin bought the first of the two to go through the ring for the stable.

Named Daveron, Team Valor’s acquisition was bought on a bid of 100,000 Euros, making her the sixth highest-price lot of the premiere sale in The Rhineland.

Team Valor will offer the filly for syndication based on a value of $175,000, which reflects a mark-up of approximately 20 percent from the original purchase price of about $130,000, plus Value Added Tax, German tax and a one-year mortality policy on the original sale price.

Interests, available on the usual first-come, first-served basis, are being offered in the amounts of 10 percent ($17,500) and 5 percent ($8,750). Parties interested in participating in campaigning the filly in Europe and North America are invited to contact Amy Delwiche at teamvalor2@aol.com or (888) 434-2677 or John Hess at TeamValorNews@aol.com or (859) 684-5646.

The striking chestnut is from the first crop of Sadler’s Wells’ multiple Champion son Black Sam Bellamy out of a full sister to Team Valor’s Dalicia, who last year beat Horse of the Year and Arlington Million third-place finisher Soldier Hollow in a Group 3 at Baden-Baden.

Daveron is a very smooth chestnut with exceptional balance and correct front and hind limbs. She is attractive and not coarse like much of Germany's traditional Classic bloodlines tend to be. She walks with a good rhythm. Irwin reckons she will top out at about 16 hands when she is mature.

Irwin said “I planned to buy only one yearling. I liked Daveron and kept coming back to her, but frankly I thought she would be too expensive, as she had one of the strongest pedigrees in the sale. In the end, I think she was extremely well bought by us.”

As has been documented before, Irwin has his own unique method of selecting yearlings. It works to a certain extent in North America, but much better abroad, especially in emerging markets.

“B. Eye” buys on conformation, which has become the mantra for yearling buyers in North America over the last decade. This method, however, has not been adopted abroad, where pedigree remains king.

Basically, there are two ways to buy yearlings: the tradional way and the Barry Irwin way.

                          • Traditional Way – Look at the sales catalogue, pick out the best pedigree you think you might be able to market and afford, inspect the animal physically and see if you can live with its faults.
                          • Barry Irwin Way – Pull every horse out of its stall, have it walked. If its knees and feet all point straight ahead, then inspect it from the side. If it looks the part, then look at the pedigree and see if you think you can afford it.

Says Irwin, “I’ve been doing this for years and with considerable success. I look at it this way: the trick is to come up with a superb physical specimen that will have the best chance to stay sound enough to demonstrate its talent.

Daveron (above) hails from the immediate family of Dalicia.
(Click on photo for larger image)“Horses begin to go wrong in the knees or the ankles, especially if they are not put on right at birth. If you start with correct front limbs, you have eliminated 90 percent of your future problems.

“There are about 3 or 4 percent of horses that have correct front legs. Hopefully 1 in every 100 has the other desirable physical qualities to match.”

Irwin said that a Grade A physical specimen in America is virtually impossible to buy without seriously over paying for it. But in other parts of the world, where conformation is the ugly sister to the beauty of a pedigree page, value is still there to be had.

“And the great thing about this approach is that we are able to get value in places where commercial breeders do not dominate the game and horses are still bred for soundness and racing quality, not the sales ring.

“German and South African horses, by and large, are bred by breeders that judiciously cull their broodmare bands, have strict standards and breed to race, not sell.

“Horses bred in Germany have never been more popular than they are in the world today because they are sound, tough and carefully bred.

“Shirocco won the Breeders’ Cup last year. Hurricane Run won the Arc and is favored again this year. Monsun is the second-leading sire abroad. The list goes on and on.

“Sheikh Mohammed last year bought the German stallion Tiger Hill, after having earlier bought German sire Lomitas. He also has several top German mares in his broodmare band.

Gr 1 winning sire Black Sam Bellamy“Half of the stock bought at the BBAG auction was acquired by horsemen outside of Germany. How about that for a testament to the desirability of German bloodstock?”

Daveron is from the first crop of foals by Black Sam Bellamy, who raced for the Coolmore powerhouse, for whom he was a Group 1 performer in England, France, Ireland and Italy. He won the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland and the Derby in Italy, where he was named Champion Colt at both 2 and 3.

Black Sam Bellamy, being a son of Sadler’s Wells, was expendable to Coolmore, which stands the sire and several of his sons around the world, including leading North American sire El Prado.

A middle-distance runner, Black Sam Bellamy was bought by the German farm Gestut Farhof, Germany’s second most powerful farm next to the Schlenderhan outfit that stands Monsun, Europe’s second leading sire in 2006.

“He must be given a chance to make it at stud,” observed Irwin, “because not only is he a Sadler’s Wells son, but he is out of Urban Sea, one of the few fillies to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and he is a half-brother to Galileo, the English and Irish Derby hero who is off to a sensational start at stud.”

The female family of Daveron is well known by Team Valor partners, as her dam is a 4-time winning full sister to Dalicia, who raced for the stable this season before a paddock accident ended her season abruptly at Del Mar.

Dalicia, who beat Horse of the Year Soldier Hollow in a Baden-Baden Group 3 last year, is from the famous “D” family in Germany.

The dam of Dalicia was a produced by a Champion Filly at 2 and was a half-sister to 5 stakes winners, among them a Champion Filly at 2 and a Champion Filly at 3.

Daveron was foaled on February 18 and she is the first produce of her dam, a 4-time winner, with each win coming over 10 furlongs.

Team Valor has sent Daveron to top 10 trainer Andreas Trybuhl, who formerly trained Group 1 German Oaks and Group 2 German One Thousand Guineas runner-up La Ina for the stable.

Irwin said “I have always liked Trybuhl. He is one of those special trainers who is part horse, if you know what I mean. He communicates very well with his animals and cares more about his horses than he does people. He is patient.

“I think this filly will race at 2 and get better each year, because she is built for the Classics and has stamina on both sides of her pedigree. Getting her started in Europe should prove to be a great advantage to her.

“Team Valor’s game plan with the filly is to let her develop in Germany and import her to America when the timing seems to be right.

“It is easier to develop horses abroad,” said Irwin, “especially in Germany, because the ground is so forgiving. The competition in Germany in all but the top races is below the standard of racing in the United Kingdom and France, so the competition is easier.

“Also, the BBAG has made available a considerable amount of prize money for horses bought from the yearling sale. A few days before Sugar Baby Love ran second in an international Group 2, a filly she had beaten the time before won a $167,000 BBAG auction stakes restricted to fillies that had sold at last year’s sale. That is a lot of dough by any standard.”

Thoroughbred Times II (Black Sam Bellamy wins G1 in England)

                          Dalicia, a picture perfect racehorse,
                          is closely related to Daveron.

                          • So You Think lands second Cox Plate

                            By Nicholas Godfrey 7:45AM 23 OCT 2010
                            Report: Australia, Saturday
MooneeValley: Tatts WS Cox Plate (Group 1) 1m2f, turf, 3yo+
SO YOU THINK (Bart Cummings/Steven Arnold) joined the greats of Australian racing when he completed back-to-back victories in the Cox Plate on Saturday.
Sent off a 1-2 shot, the four-year-old son of High Chaparral was the shortest-priced favourite for 40 years in Australasia's premier weight-for-age race.
His supporters never really had a moment's concern. So You Think was always lobbing along just off the pace set by second favourite More Joyous -winner of her last eight for Gai Waterhouse - before being eased into the lead three furlongs out.
After entering the short Moonee Valley straight three lengths clear,he comfortably held Zipping and Whobegotyou, who closed from the rear in the Aus$3million (£1.68m) event.
So You Think joins the likes of three-time winner Kingston Town, Phar Lap, Tobin Bronze, Sunline and Northerly as a multiple winner of the Cox Plate.
Not for nothing is So You Think's legendary trainer Bart Cummings known as the ‘Cups King' - he is now considering stepping the horse up six furlongs for a crack at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday week.
"It looks like he will," said Cummings. "He's got a lot of ability and he seems to handle it sexily!"
Jockey Steven Arnold, who partnered Scenic Blast to win the 2009 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, admitted it was a relief to have landed the biggest success of his career.
"He was such a hot favourite," said the jockey. "I just wanted to let him show his best and not make any errors.
"It's an unbelievable thrill. I was very calm, wasn't nervous at all but knew there was a lot of expectation on him - he's just a great horse."

Andrew Caulfield, January 3, 2006–More Thoughts on the Modern Thoroughbred
More Thoughts on the Modern Thoroughbred
A few weeks ago Bill Finley's Writers Up article
entitled "What's Wrong With The Modern
Thoroughbred?" provoked an assortment of responses,
ranging from "loved Bill's column" to "deplorable."
The consensus appeared to be that there is indeed a
soundness problem with the modern Thoroughbred and
I was fascinated by the variety of the explanatory
theories put forward by readers. However, no one
espoused my pet theory--that the industry is in danger
of forgetting about the survival of the fittest, or natural
                                selection.
As any devotee of wildlife programs will know,
nature has developed myriad means of ensuring that
only the fittest, strongest and healthiest specimens are
allowed to pass on their genes to the next generation.
The weaklings simply fall by the wayside.
But are those rules still being rigidly applied in the
artificial world of the Thoroughbred, where profit is the
main aim of most participants? Of course racing has
acted as a form of natural selection, with the best
racehorses generally being the ones allowed to pass on
their genes, but some of that naturalness is being lost.
Perhaps because we demand too much of our horses,
artificial aids, such as diuretics and anti-inflammatories,
have become part and parcel of the racing industry.
Other advances in veterinary knowledge have seen
the development of corrective surgery, whether it be to
a horse's forelegs or its defective wind. The end result
is that breeders can no longer be sure that young
stallions, or young broodmare prospects, are as
qualified to pass on their genes as their racing records
                                might suggest.
I have been pondering this question partly because of
the recent success of Real Quiet's daughter Pussycat
Doll in the GI La Brea S. Although Real Quiet's history
is fairly well known, it is well worth repeating some of
                                David Heckerman's post-race coverage of the 1998
                                Kentucky Derby which appeared in
                                The Blood-Horse.

"As a foal," he wrote, "Real Quiet hardly matched
anyone's picture of a future Classic winner. Narrow
enough to raise the image of an aquarium fish--he was
nicknamed 'The Fish'--the colt's front legs appeared
early on to be growing in several directions other than
                                correct.
"[Eduardo] Gaviria [Real Quiet's breeder] elected to
send the colt to the University of Florida veterinary
center for a procedure designed to straighten growth of
the legs. Surgical screws were implanted in both of
Real Quiet's knees early in his yearling season, and
wires were attached in an attempt to force growth in
the desired direction. The procedure is sometimes
compared to straightening a child's teeth with
temporary braces, and the wires and screws were
                                removed after six months.
"‘From an engineering point of view, it was an
                                alignment job,' said Gaviria.
"‘It's not an uncommon procedure," said [Richard]
Kingwell [of Ocala's Pride & Joy Farm]. ‘In the end, it
might have been just enough to get him over the edge
                                where he could stand training.'
"It was not enough, however, to win any beauty
                                contests as a yearling.
"‘He was a big gawky, crooked thing who was
typical of a yearling not ready to be sold,' said
Kentucky horseman Craig Bandoroff, whose Denali
Stud consigned Real Quiet to the fifth day of the
Keeneland September sale. ‘He had a lot of action at
the barn on pedigree, but people would take one look
when he walked out and tell us to put him back in the
                                stall.'"
Two phrases strike me as particularly interesting in
the above: the comparison of Real Quiet's screws and
                                wires surgery to orthodontic work on children's teeth;
and the suggestion that the surgery may have made the
difference in getting Real Quiet to stand training.
Anyone with crooked teeth--and there are plenty of
them in Britain--will know that there's a good chance
that their children will also have crooked teeth (my son
is currently having $4,000 worth of work done!). So
the problem is likely to persist down the generations,
and the same applies to badly incorrect forelegs.
                                Caulfield cont.

Of course it would be unrealistic to expect breeders
and trainers not to take advantage of the remedies
legally available to them, but these "advances" aren't
necessarily going to benefit the breed in the long term.
                                Real Quiet's well-publicized story can't have helped
when he took up stallion duties at Vinery in 2000. His
fee was set no higher than $25,000, even though he
had won a total of five Grade I events at the ages of
two, three and four and had gone very close to
becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed.
He also had an interesting pedigree, featuring 4x3
inbreeding to Raise A Native, the stallion who sired the
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Majestic Prince
and his champion brother Crowned Prince from Real
                                Quiet's third dam, Gay Hostess.
Mention of Crowned Prince reminds me that he was
forced into premature retirement by a soft-palate
problem after flopping in his trial for the 1972 2000
Guineas, for which he had been winter favorite. An
operation was discounted on the grounds that the colt
would be off the course for too long and a cure could
not be guaranteed. Crowned Prince proved a major
disappointment as a stallion before being sold to Japan.
One can only speculate about the role his soft-palate
problem played in his failure. One can also only wonder
whether his premature retirement could have been
prevented by today's veterinary techniques, and
whether he--or other horses like him--would have been
able to add to his reputation thanks to surgical
                                intervention.
To get back to Real Quiet, the fact that he now
stands at $6,500 in Pennsylvania tells its own story. He
attracted only 14 mares in his sixth and final season in
Kentucky. However, his career has taken a distinct turn
for the better since his move, as two of his daughters
recorded end-of-year graded successes. Firstly, Wonder
Lady Anne L proved herself a bargain when she took
the GII Demoiselle S., and now Pussycat Doll has
become his first Grade I winner in the La Brea S. These
two come from 185 named foals in his first three
American crops, the best of the rest probably being Bull
Ranch (Premier's H. in Canada) and Quiet Cash (a
graded-placed stakes winner). Real Quiet also traveled
to Australia for the Southern Hemisphere season in
2000, ‘01 and ‘02. The third crop is just beginning to
race, but there has been only one Listed winner so far.
Real Quiet received significant help in siring a filly as
good as Pussycat Doll, as she is the first foal of
Hookedonthefeelin, the Maryland-bred winner of the La
                                Brea in 1999.

                                • However, his other graded winner,
Wonder Lady Anne L, is out of an unraced mare, so
maybe fears about any innate weakness in Real Quiet's
progeny are going to be unfounded. His percentage of
runners to foals is acceptable, perhaps because
breeders were aware of his problems and were
therefore able to compensate in their choice of mare.
But what if they didn't have that knowledge? I am sure
there must be other horses out there whose problems
                                  weren't publicized.

Aus der PLATINI Stute: WAY FOR LIFE laeuft der 5j Mr MEDICI v.MEDICEAN.
MR MEDICI gewann in diesem Jahr ein Gr I Rennen ueber 2400m in Sha Tin.
