Brilliant Camelot Takes Two Thousand Guineas

Aidan O’Brien-trained Camelot took the lead in the final furlong and then held off the late challenge of French Fifteen to win the QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) by a neck at Newmarket May 5.

The 3-year-old son of Montjeu, making his first start of the year in the Guineas, remains undefeated in three career starts. He is owned by Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier, and Michael Tabor

A field of 18 sophomores went to the post in the Guineas, with Camelot going off as the heavy favorite.

Ridden confidently by O’Brien’s son, Joseph, Camelot was settled toward the back of the pack nearest the stands’ side rail as the runners split into three separate groups. Longshot Talwar was the overall leader, showing the way through the early stages of the race, as the three groups spread out the width of the Rowley Mile.

Imperial Monarch is the aptly named colt charged with winning a first Prix Du Jockey Club for O'Brien, whose best effort came when Westphalia was third to Le Havre in 2009.


If successful, O'Brien would match the feat of Roger Charlton and Maurice Zilber in saddling the winners of the Epsom and Chantilly Classics in the same season.

Connections of leading domestic hope French Fifteen (Nicolas Clement/Christophe Peslier) would have been pleased by Camelot's dominant display at Epsom, having got to within a neck of the Derby winner in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas last month.

"He's had a great preparation and we're very pleased with his homework," said Clement on Friday.

While Camelot took the extra half mile in his stride, French Fifteen is by no means guaranteed to get the 1m2½f of the Jockey Club on breeding.

"The big question mark is the stamina but we're hopeful he can do it," continued Clement.

Vying for favouritism among the home defence will be Kesampour (Mikel Delzangles/Christophe Lemaire), who along with outsider Lunayir bids to become the Aga Khan's seventh French Derby winner.

The son of King's Best is a perfect four from four but must race right-handed for the first time.

Jetzt spricht der Boss: John Magnier will die Triple Crown

"Camelots Brillianz ist da, damit sie jeder Rennsportfan sehen darf. Wir haben nur das Glück, mit diesem außergewöhnlichen Pferd etwas zu tun zu haben zu dürfen", brachte es der Coolmore Supremo nach dem Epsom Derby-Sieg des dreijährigen Montjeu-Sohnes auf den Punkt.

Nach einer zehnjährigen Durststrecke (High Chaparal 2002) gab es wieder einen Derby-Sieg in Epsom für Coach Aidan O'Brien. Und nun ist ganz Großes möglich. Die Triple Crown ist zum Greifen nah!

Gab es nach Camelots Sieg in den 2000 Guineas noch viele Insider der Szene, die Magnier und Co. die Triple Crown-Route aufgrund mangelnder kommerzieller Wertigkeit des St. Leger nicht ernsthaft zugetraut haben, scheint sich diese Frage nicht mehr wirklich zu stellen.

"Wäre nicht jeder jetzt in der Versuchung, die Triple Crown zu vollenden?", so noch einmal Magnier. Zwar gilt dieser als der cleverste Geschäftsmann der gesamten Rennsportwelt und doch steckt auch in ihm am Ende des Tages ein großer Sportsmann.

"Diese Siege und Momente bedeuten mir im Alter immer mehr. Wenn man mich vor 30 Jahren gefragt hätte, hätte ich es wohl andersherum gedacht, aber heute sind solche Erfolge schöner denn je. Ich werde mich mit Michael (Tabor) und Derrick (Smith) zusammensetzen und wir besprechen die Triple Crown", erläutert der Coolmore-Boss.

Dieser und seine Partner sollen sich mit dem Gedanken Triple Crown schon seit Newmarket und Camelots 2000 Guineas-Sieg ernsthaft beschäftigen. Der Triple Crown-Kurs purzelte bei RaceBets.com in der Woche nach den Guineas von 250 schnell auf 120 und dann 80:10.

Aktuell gibt es beim offiziellen Wettanbieter des Rennsports nur noch magere 15:10 auf einen Leger-Sieg Camelots.
