SpiritLake is a nice looking chestnut stallion with a good short back, nice angles, and bone. His pedigree tells us right away that he was built for speed and I amsure he has it in abundance as well as an agility that comes from tightline-breeding to top athletic bloodlines. At first I didn’t know where to beginwith this analysis, because he is not just one strong line; instead he has manygenetic powers. In some ways his pedigree reminds me of Alme SF, who I hadfinished analyzing a few months ago, and he too did not stand out at first asstrictly being of one type or dominance, with powers coming from linebreedingfrom the Thoroughbred, Anglo Arab, Anglo Norman and Trotter. And it was onlythrough examining each quadrant of his lineage that his true jump potency wasrevealed. So too, Spirit Lake had some surprises for me.
Whenresearching Thoroughbreds for their strong sport traits, we have to get pastthe usual chatter about the bloodlines, because first and foremost they arebred to race, and so most of the literature is directed to that end. But manyhave forgotten that the Thoroughbred is a multi-talented saddle horse, withbloodlines that have powered all forms of sport around the globe. And I havediscovered, as I did with Alme SF, that this stallion possesses a remarkableamount of background concentration in the best taproot jumping bloodlines inthe world.
Firstoff, we must also realize most Thoroughbreds are hard wired to jump; it beganearly in the genetic pool and was carried forward with tightly bred carriers. Ihave traced the trait right back to the pre-TB studs in the 1600s, but overtime it became apparent that some lines are more able to transmit the traitthan others—just like some lines transfer speed better. My experience has foundthat the lines that are strongly line or inbred to the original jumptypesetters, and then every few generations have the line revitalized with aninbred individual, and so on through the generations, are the lines we valuetoday as ‘jump’ lines.
SpiritLake is loaded with duplications (line-breeding), so he is like a loadedgenetic gun, just waiting for a mating that connects well with his pedigree torelease the talents to the next generation. And I have found he carries huge concentrationsof the jump trait. He is fast as well, and surely will do best in eventingbecause of his strong running lines. But in breeding he can produce stars inboth disciplines fairly easily, once again depending on how the lineagescombine and which traits become strongest. This depth of sport traits, goingright back to as far as we can trace is the reason the Thoroughbred isindispensable in sport horse breeding. Very few other breeds carry theseconcentrated sport genetics. As far as jumping traits go, the Standardbred isthe only other breed I know of that is in the Thoroughbred’s league. Not sosurprising when you remember that they were the same breed until the mid-1800sand both carry extreme concentrations of the root jumper trait. So, no matter what the current fantasyliterature that is being pedaled in sport horse circles is proclaiming, it isthe racehorse breeds that are needed if you want to succeed in sport.
Ifwe look at his pedigree we see several duplications in what is called theengine room, usually the 4th through 6th generation inthe pedigree, this area is called the ‘engine’ room because the power foundthere is often what is powering the genetics. (I am going to identify inparenthesis significant jump transmitters in concentration in these horses, andwill enlarge on their lines below.) And with this stallion there is quite a bitof action in that region, thus my original confusion on how to proceed. He is6x4 to Northern Dancer through sons, a very common configuration in theEuropean Thoroughbred (strong in the jump lines of Clemence, Birdcatcher andLexington RH). He is 4x4 to Ahonoora, also through sons, a stallion I wasunfamiliar with, but who turns out to be a warehouse for several strong jumptransmitters (Barcaldine—Birdcatcher, Bay Ronald, Le Sancy-Thormanby, Clemence). There is the great Habitat 5x5 (Birdcatcher, Clemence, Lexington RH),sex-balanced, and his sire Sir Gaylord is 6x7x6x5x6 sex-balanced, and further strengtheningfrom the grandsire Turn-To being present with 6 lines, one an additional lineof his other good son Hail to Reason, all of these add to the male emphasis ofthe lineage and once again are needed for performance horses of both sexes andare essential for males. This is a male leaning pedigree, and points to thesons being better than the mares. But like I said, first glances do not givethe full story.

The n there is an outstanding buildup of the great sprinter Court Martial 8x8x9x8x8x7x7x7 sex-balanced (Birdcatcher warehouse). Behind all this is the 55 lines of the full brothers Fairway and Pharos—this is a saturation, providing extreme typesetting once again for the fast racer, but also each of those 55 carries 23 lines of the full brothers Birdcatcher/Faugh-a-Ballah. This is typesetting so potent because just in these 55 lines they supply over 1200 lines in the background of the full brothers Birdcatcher—Faugh-a-Ballah who just happen to be a powerful taproot jump line. The Fairway-Pharos (sire of the great Nearco) configuration is the leading genetic type in this pedigree, strongly influencing the lines close up, even though most of those lines are in the 9th and 10th generation, they are here in such great numbers it is like these brothers are sitting in between the 4th and 5th generation.Just when I thought this was strictly a male tilted lineage I discovered Spirit Lake is also overrun with Canterbury Pilgrim lines: 91 in his background. I have discovered that Canterbury Pilgrim is also an extremely powerful jump transmitter because she carries 82 lines of the original Thoroughbred jump transmitter from the 1600s, which gives Spirit Lake gives almost 7500 root jump lines, just from her—it is mind boggling. Also closer up he carries the mares Fascination 5x5, Sanda 7x7x6x7 and Quiver 7x7x6x7. And then there is an interesting triple of the mare Discipliner 7x7x7 (Birdcatcher warehouse), through sons and the tremendous background buildup of Canterbury Pilgrim (91). Plus we find ¾ sisters: Christmas Wind and Bally’s Mill 6x6 which is also a strong female element.
There are other notable top sport progenitors with multiples lines closer up here as well: Native Dancer, Tom Fool, Nasrullah, Polynesian and Djebel—all good sport and jump lines. Of the engine room duplications, I worked out the number of lines and their generation positions to figure out which influences are stronger of them. And it turned out Sir Gaylord and Ahonoora are the strongest, with both representing a 3rd generation strength. Close behind was Court Martial, Habitat, Turn-To, Gainsborough and the Fairway/Pharos combination behind them, in representive numbers that place them all between the 4th and 5th generation. And as I said, even though the Fairway—Pharos lines are further back they are here in almost immeasurable strength for the Birdcatcher jump line, and they are further empowered through their presence in the closer duplications.
I am in my third decade of tracing sport bloodlines, and through all this certain lines have surfaced as consistently transferring sport talent. However, often I could not identify why those lines were so powerful. Lately I have made tremendous progress in this area, especially in the jumper trait. So I am able to confidently point out some of these for you.
All of us in the sport horse world have been inundated with ‘warmblood’ literature for decades on sport bloodlines as well, and it is the common industry understanding that Le Sancy, Marco, Ultimate, Furioso, Rantzau, Dollar and others are ‘the’ jumper lines. That is what the industry literature has been declaring to us. And like most of us I thought that was it, that those are the root jumper lines, and that is what they are said to be. All that changed for me when I began analyzing the American world beaters, because when I did so I discovered those proclaimed jumper lines were not found in our American bred medal earners or Hall of Famers. Instead I consistently found Fair Play, Domino, Spearmint, The Tetrarch, Swynford and others, but I never found the ‘warmblood’ listed ones. I didn’t know it at the time, but my research on the jumper trait was just beginning. And from there I discovered that there were certain source or root jump lines behind my American jump bloodlines, and these were most notably: Birdcatcher and his full brother Faugh-a-Ballah (Irish TBs), Clemence (English TB mare), Canterbury Pilgrim (English TB) and the American Running Horses Lexington RH and his sire Boston RH and Vandal RH.
Finding these jump sources was perplexing, because there appeared no common ground between the American and the European jump lines. But then I extended the named warmblood jump contributors, and found all of them, with the exception of Le Sancy and Dollar (French TB lines), contained critical mass in Birdcatcher, Canterbury Pilgrim, Barcaldine, Sainfoin-Sierra and Clemence. Barcaldine (sire of Marco) is a Birdcatcher line, and the ever present full siblings Sainfoin-Sierra through their mare Sanda show they too are a Birdcatcher warehouse. Le Sancy’s pedigree gave him away as being powered by Thormanby and his full sister Lady Hawthorn 3x3, together they carry 82 lines of the original jump source; plus Bay Ronald (sire of Dark Ronald and others) also came forward a powerful transmitters of the jump trait. Recently I have discovered all the lines, both Europe’s and ours, all of them go back to an early Thoroughbred who is largely of Hobby—Barb bloodlines (full story will be found in Standardbred Sport Horses due out this year). And by analyzing Canterbury Pilgrim and Thormanby above, it became clear they too should be recognized as strong jump carriers for their concentration of this original source.
Taking all this new found source information I extended Spirit Lake’s lineage to 14 generations, and found he (like Alme SF) is a virtual jumping warehouse. He has an incredible 358 lines of Clemence. A mare no one was even aware of 10 years ago, because the famous sire Bend Or has only been recently found to be a ringer, that is, he is really a stallion named Tadcaster (DNA—Bower,Hill) who is out of the mare Clemence. This is power behind the The Tetrarch who is 3x3 to Tadcaster and his full sister, Spearmint (Carbine—out of the Clemence daughter The Mersey), and Fair Play (out of the Tadcaster daughter Fairy Gold), each who has established a jumping dynasty. But that is not all in this horse; he has around 300 lines of the American jumping root of Lexington RH, and as you saw above just in the lines of Fairway-Pharos, the lines of Birdcatcher and his brother top over 1200 (Birdcatcher was born in 1833 so it is difficult to calculate the exact number of his lines—but it is stupendous), with notable amounts of Bay Ronald (103), Le Sancy (74), Barcaldine (74) and Dollar (42) and closer up key modern day jump lines like Mumtaz Mahal (9) as well. What this all means is that there is tremendous jumping talent bulging out of Spirit Lake’s background, which is then refocused to the front via all those beautiful duplications in the front (Ahonoora, Sir Gaylord, Habitat, Court Martial etc).
Because of the notable variety of concentrations found in this stallion, he may be bred to a variety of mares and have success, as it will be hard to find a sport horse with Thoroughbred lines that cannot connect to what he carries. My only suggestion is to work on developing ‘filly factors’ when you breed your own stock from him, especially if later on you want to produce another stallion from him.
Let me give you an example of a line that would connect well with his and improve the male leaning as well. Keep in mind this is an example, and that there is surely better matches for him. I provide this so that if and when you decide to breed up from him for the next generation you will have an illustration of a possibility. This idea began when I noticed the stallion Home Guard one the dam-side is closely related to the mega-sire Sadlers Wells. Seeing Sadlers Wells (and his 6 full siblings) have already making their mark strongly not just in racing, but in jumping (a top National Hunt line), this then is hot line to connect to and he will be found everywhere where there is racing. But more important is that the Sadlers Wells family connects well with his genetics. For an instance of this in action let’s look at the combination of Spirit Lake with the El Prado son, Kittens Joy, a hot sire in the States, but surely in the future he will permeate the Europeans as well.
This combination is not perfect, for instance Kittens Joy brings in more male Turn-To which to me is less than ideal, but the other connections outweigh this factor, plus he carries a Northern Dancer daughter, Fanfreleuche, which balances the Northern Dancer concentration in Spirit.

Kittens Joy was a good but not great racer, and like the current top sire in the US, Tapit, he was not looked on initially by the industry as the next breeding star. But both of these sires started producing so many winners they could not be ignored. So what does this sire carry that is so great? He is 5x4 to the full siblings Thong/Lt. Stevens through daughters, an extremely powerful filly factor. Full siblings are the single strongest pedigree design you can make for potency. But that is not all he also carries a huge amount of Man O’War and his full brother My Play in the 6th and 7th generations, sex-balanced so a colt factor. (This is similar to Spirits Fairway-Pharos buildup). Then there are multiples of the great broodmare sires War Admiral and Blue Larkspur through daughters, once again strong filly factors. Plus there are multiples of the full brothers Bull Dog-Sir Gallahad, sex-balanced, another good colt factor. Plus multiples of Mahmoud and Princequillo, just great stuff, all top sport lines, and most of them very sound. So that explains why this originally overlooked sire is rising to the top of the heap, his pedigree is potency personified, and in good sound sport powerhouses. (Always look at the quality of the sire you are considering crosses on your stock).
When Spirit and Kittens are brought together some good things happen. The power line of Forli becomes sex-balanced 5x5, as does Buckpasser 4x4, and the sire of Buckpasser, Tom Fool becomes sex-balanced also with a line of his daughter Cap and Bells 5x4x5. Also significant is Spirit’s dam-sire Foxhound finds his close relative in L’Enjoleur, the second dam-sire of Kittens Joy, which is the line that provides the sex balance for Northern Dancer and Buckpasser. A good filly factor is formed with an added daughter of Sir Ivor 6x3. I wish one of the lines of the powerhouse Roberto was a daughter, but you can’t have everything. All in all, a daughter of Kittens Joy bred to your stud could be very powerful. But as I said, there are surely other lines that make a beautiful combination as well.
In summary, Spirit Lake is a lovely young stallion with a tremendous potential to impact speed, agility and a sure jump to whatever he is bred to. He can only improve the heavy warmblood stock surrounding you and dynamically as well if they carry complementary Thoroughbred bloodlines—which is almost a given when we consider his engine room duplications. His potential is great.
