Americain Makes History With 2010 Melbourne Cup Win
Americain was the first French horse to win a Group race in Australia a few weeks ago – and now has topped the 2010 Melbourne Cup results to become the first French horse to win the Melbourne Cup.
It didn’t look like Americain’s race for much of the run as he got caught in the middle of the pack while Once Were Wild and Descarado ran together in the front for much of the run, with Harris Tweed encroaching on their run around the middle of the distance.
On the final turn, the big boys made their moves as favourite So You Think charged forward to get ahead of the pack – but maybe just a little too early. Americain ran forward slightly later and clearly had more endurance at this distance, while Maluckyday gained ground steadily.
By the last 50 metres, American was far out ahead of Maluckyday, who had made it out ahead of So You Think to the disappointment of many punters. It was a Melbourne Cup finishing order that few would have foreseen.
This is an incredible win for the French runner, as this Melbourne Cup run is the highest quality race Americain has run by far. It was a completely unexpected result and while it is a little sad that So You Think could not get the win this year, there’s no reason he won’t come back even stronger next season.

FRENCH raider Americain has won the 2010 Melbourne Cup.
Ridden by French jockey Gerald Mosse, the Geelong Cup winner stormed home to win from Maluckyday and hot favourite So You Think.
Trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, the horse was bred in America and is based in France and is Australian-owned after his purchase by Melbourne businessman Gerry Ryan when he was in Paris during this year's Tour de France.
"This job is so easy when you're in the best race on the best horse," Mosse said.
"A big thanks to the owner who gave me the confidence to be the first French jockey to win the Melbourne Cup."
So You Think took a time to settle but worked his way steadily towards the lead and loomed up into a winning position about 300 metres out.

However, he could not match Americain's turn of foot, but managed to hang on for the minor placing behind the lightweight Maluckyday.
Mosse knew Americain had the Bart Cummings-trained favourite covered.
"He was very, very strong over the last 250 metres and I knew I was going to catch him."
Part owner Gerry Ryan said Americain's win was a dream come true for him and fellow owner Kevin Bamford.
"Five years ago we planned this," Ryan said.
"This is what I've dreamed of ever since I was a kid. I was very relaxed because everything was out of my control."
It was trainer de Royer-Dupre's first Melbourne Cup campaign.
"Before it looked a difficult challenge to be competitive in this great race, but I was very confident, he's a really good horse."
Americain ($13) won by 2-3/4 lengths from Maluckyday ($9) with half a length to the $3 favourite So You Think.
Zipping ($26) came fourth in the race for the third time.
Zavite finished last, and Caulfield Cup winner Descarado failed to finish.

Shocking Melbourne Cup Result for Defending Winner
News - Melbourne Cup - Race Results
2 November 2010
It was a disappointing result for defending champion Shocking at Flemington today, the five-year-old pulling up sore after finishing a well beaten 18th in the 2010 Melbourne Cup.
The Mark Kavanagh-trained son of Street Cry won the Melbourne Cup 12 months ago, but after a horror outside barrier draw and encountering early interference, Shocking beat home just five other runners in the 150th Melbourne Cup today.
Americain won the $6 million Melbourne Cup, beating home defending champion Shocking by a massive 19 lengths.
The pace of today’s 3200m showdown was also against Shocking, the stop start motion unsuited to his race style.
It has been a long spring campaign for Shocking, who has had seven runs this season after resuming in the Liston Stakes back on August 18, now likely to be given a rest with an eye on the autumn.
There are also rumours circulating that So You Think, beaten favourite in today’s Melbourne Cup finishing third behind Americain and Maluckyday, will be retired to stud.
So You Think added another $450,000 in prize money to his incredible career earnings, the Bart Cummings-trained superstar now having accumulated $6,184,350 for his connections including owner Dato Tan Chin Nam in just 12 race starts.

Coolmore Stud will anteile an So You Think erwerben
