Only a handful of horses have won the Epsom Derby by as much as Workforce's seven-length margin and none had covered the mile-and-a-half distance faster, but such brilliant displays have proved to be false dawns in the past and he needed to reproduce that level of form to enter into champion territory. He had hung and looked uncomfortable previously when runner-up in the G1 Dante S. at York May 13 and when he dropped out in Ascot's home straight to finish nearly 17 lengths behind Harbinger (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the King George the vibes were becoming increasingly negative. With that in mind, the Stoute stable went down to brass tacks and his recent racecourse spin at Sandown--which was not received with glowing reports from those present--was the only public sighting of the Classic hero subsequently. For those who kept the faith in the time-honored Stoute magic, they were rewarded with a starting price that looked impossible in the immediate aftermath of the Derby. Kept tight to the rail by Ryan Moore early, he had only a handful of rivals behind at the top of the "false straight," but had gone the shortest way round and that proved a crucial factor as he started his challenge before the quarter pole. Lope de Vega, who had headed the field at the top of the stretch, was tiring when getting the worse of the interference which caused the lengthy enquiry--and which was eventually judged to have been caused by the subsequently-disqualified seventh Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire})--as Workforce surged alongside him. With Nakayama Festa and Masayoshi Ebina of El Condor Pasa fame now in front, Workforce had to grindand in a few yards he had put his head in front before answering every call from his rider in a pulsating finale. "He was back to his best today," winning jockey Ryan Moore said. "We got a nice run through and when it all got a bit tight at the top of the false straight, there was half a gap there and he was very brave and really quickened into it well. The Japanese horse kept at him, but he kept doing enough and has a great attitude. Ascot wasn't him--this was only the fifth race of his life and he's won a Derby and an Arc." His conditioner added, "Ryan blames himself for Ascot and felt he should have switched him off more, but I think I may have trained him too hard for the race. I said that to Prince Khalid afterwards and I think I was proved right on that, so we took a different path this time. I don't know if I'm likely to train him next year, but I'd love to." There must have been a raised eyebrow or two when
Jim Bolger announced that the triple Group 1 winner
Lush Lashes was to visit Sea the Stars in 2010, to
create a foal inbred 2x3 to the phenomenal Urban Sea.

          Sadly, Lush Lashes didn
          =t hold onto her pregnancy,
but Arc day provided compelling evidence that there is
merit to the idea of trying to reinforce Urban Sea

          =s
influence. Not only did Lush Lashes

          = sire Galileo achieve
a magnificent Group 1 double with his daughters Misty
For Me and Lily of the Valley, but the family also struck
in the Arc, with winner Workforce being a son of Urban
          Sea

          =s half-brother King=s Best.
          Workforce

=s victory came 17 years after Urban Sea
sprang a 37-1 surprise with her neck victory in the Arc,
a race that also fell to her brilliant son Sea the Stars 12
months ago. Anabaa Blue, Black Sam Bellamy and
Anzillero, three other Group 1 winners from the family,
also contested the Arc, which underlines the family

          =s
          rare prowess over middle distances.

            WORKFORCE A BREEDERS’ CUP POSSIBLE
            Prix de l
=Arc de Triomphe hero Workforce (GB) (King=s
Best) may yet run again this season after it emerged
yesterday that connections have not ruled out an attempt
            at the GI Breeders
= Cup Turf at Churchill Downs
            Nov. 6.
            AWorkforce seems to have come
out of the Arc very well,
            @ Khalid
            Abdullah
            =s Racing Manager Teddy
            Grimthorpe told
            PA Sport. AWe=ll have to
see how he is over the next couple of
weeks, and then make a decision on
whether to run him again this
            year--possibly in the Breeders
            = Cup.@ The
question of whether or not Workforce
will continue racing as a four-year-old is
another connections have yet to answer.

            A
We=ll sit down at some stage and talk to Prince
            Khalid,
@ said Grimthorpe. AThere are several factors
involved in whether [or not] he stays in training as a
four-year-old, and we all need time to reflect.
            @

GOLDIKOVA, PACO BOY POINT TO BC MILE
            Reflecting on Sunday
=s G1 Prix de la Foret success
            for
Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), trainer Freddy praised his
star racemare and indicated she is bang on target to
attemp a third win in the GI Breeders'
            Cup Mile at Churchill Downs
            Nov. 6.
            AGoldikova was brilliant on
            Sunday,
@ said Head. AIt was a brilliant
race, and she got a great ride
            from [jockey] Olivier [Peslier], who
rode a very clever race, and she
won well. I was very happy with
the way she quickened, but it was
a tough race. They allowed her to lead, and when Regal
            Parade took over, Olivier didn
            =t panic, and she just
            came back. She wasn
=t blowing after the race, she was
cool when she came back and didn
            =t have a hard race.
She was very good this morning, she ate up and was
            fine. It
=s the Breeders= Cup next, and it could be her last
race. Well, for the moment it will be her last race, but
you never know, as the owners are sporting people.
They love to see her run, and they will never get another

            one like her.

This could be a very big week for King
              =s Best, winner
of the millennium 2000 Guineas. The Haras du Logis
resident already has the Japanese Derby in the bag,
              thanks to Eishin Flash
=s narrow victory in the Tokyo
Yushun two days ago, and he has serious candidates
for the English and French Derbys next weekend,
thanks to Workforce and Simon de Montfort. For good
measure, his once-raced daughter Sajjhaa is now one of
the leading fancies for the Oaks, following her widemargin
              debut victory at Sandown.
This clutch of Classic contenders is another example
of success breeding further success five years down
              the line. King
              =s Best=s first three-year-olds raced with
distinction in 2005, with Proclamation winning the
G1 Sussex S., Dubai Surprise the G1 Premio Lydia
Tesio and Oiseau Rare the G2 Prix de Royallieu.
Another stakes winner, Runaway, was good enough to
earn a Timeform rating of 118 that year, and Notability,
another member of this first crop, was to become a
Group 1 performer in 2006. King
              =s Best consequently
attracted a strong book of mares in 2006, which
produced his current crop of three-year-olds (some 20
of which won at two last year).
              It hasn
=t all been plain sailing with King=s Best=s
stallion career, though. Although he commanded the
              substantial fee of
i35,000 for most of his first six
years at Kildangan Stud, his fee fell to
              i25,000 in
              2007 and then to
i15,000 in 2008, after none of his
progeny had scored at higher than Group 3 level in
2007. Towards the end of 2008, Darley took the
decision to switch him to France, a country where
              King
=s Best had been very ably represented by such as
Creachadoir (a close second in the 2007 French 2000
Guineas), Best Name (runner-up in the 2006 Prix du

              Jockey-Club) and Oiseau Rare.

                  King
=s Best had completed his first French season by
                  the time his son King
=s Apostle became his first Group 1
winner in France, in the 2009 Prix Maurice de Gheest.
Perhaps some seeds of doubt had also been sown by
                  King
=s Best=s record in Australia, where he stood the
2001, 2003 and 2004 seasons. He failed to come up
with a single group winner there from nearly 250 foals.
It is therefore going to be interesting to see how he
fares with his first Argentine crop, conceived in 2007
at Haras Vacacion. Some of the yearlings from this crop
are on offer at the Copa Bullrich sale early next week.
Part of the problem with King
                  =s Best has been his
widespread reputation for siring plenty of offspring
which inherit his highly strung temperament. This was
probably evident at the 2009 yearling sales, when
youngsters from his penultimate Irish crop achieved a
median of less than 16,000gns, off a fee of
                  i25,000,
with his fillies again proving a much harder sell than his
colts. Of course, a difficult temperament needn
                  =t be a
barrier to high-class ability, even if it can make a
                  trainer
                  =s job much more challenging.
On the other hand, it mustn
                  =t be forgotten that King=s
Best was a good Classic winner--good enough to defeat
                  Giant
=s Causeway at Newmarket--or that his pedigree
                  could hardly be more
                  Alive.@ His sire Kingmambo has
proved himself one of the era
                  =s most prolific sources of
European Classic winners, while his dam Allegretta will
forever be remembered for producing Urban Sea, the
Arc-winning mare who gave us those magnificent colts
                  Galileo and Sea the Stars.
Breeders and trainers may be forced to reassess their
                  prejudices if King
                  =s Best=s Classic contenders continue
to shine this week. Perhaps--rather like Kingmambo
                  =s
American son Lemon Drop Kid--he is destined to gain
new-found respect as a stallion after having his ability
                  questioned.
Sons of Kingmambo were responsible for both the
colts that fought out the Japanese Derby, as the
runner-up, Rose Kingdom, is by King Kamehameha.
This winner of the 2004 Japanese Derby (also sire of
                  this year
=s Japanese 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner
Apapane) is based at Shadai Farm, the organisation
credited with breeding Eishin Flash. However, as with
the Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver, the people
credited with breeding the Classic winner are not the
people who arranged the mating that resulted in the
Derby heroes. Shadai acquired Eishin Flash
                  =s dam
                  Moonlady for 300,000gns at Tattersalls
                  = 2006
December Sales, when the German-bred mare was in
                  foal to King
                  =s Best.
                  If Moonlady
=s name sounds familiar, it is because she
spent several years in America. She arrived in America
to challenge for the GII Long Island H., having already
won three group races in Germany, including the
G2 German St Leger over 13/4 miles. Her connections
allowed her to take her chance, even though the Long
Island was forced off the turf by heavy rain. Moonlady
justified this bold decision by carrying Gary Tanaka
                  =s
colors to victory, but she was unable to win again in
                  nine further American starts.
                  When I reviewed Moonlady
                  =s pedigree after her Long
                  Island victory, I commented,
                  AWith these bloodlines,
Moonlady is virtually guaranteed a very successful
                  future as a broodmare.
@ Her second dam Majoritat had
possessed enough speed to win the German 1000
Guineas over a mile, plus enough stamina to take the
German Oaks over 1 3/8 miles. Majoritat now has
                  numerous stakes-winning descendants, including
Macleya, who failed by only a short neck to land the
G1 Prix Royal-Oak in 2007, and Mystic Lips, winner of
the G1 German Oaks in 2007. Two of Majoritat
                  =s sons,
Malinas and Masterplayer, were good enough to be
                  placed in the German Derby.
                  One of Moonlady
                  =s greatest attractions as a
broodmare was that her pedigree is free of many of the
most ubiquitous stallions, and contains very little
                  Northern Dancer blood.

                    I suspect that King
=s Best may have been chosen for
her on the basis that he is out of a German-bred mare.
This produced two lines in the fifth generation of Eishin
                    Flash
=s pedigree to the three-time champion sire
                    Birkhahn.
                    Another interesting aspect of Moonlady
                    =s pedigree
was that she is inbred 4x5 to the outstanding French
stayer Reliance II. This winner of the Prix du Jockey-
Club and Grand Prix de Paris was a son of the
                    outstanding Dupr‚ broodmare Relance. Relance
                    =s two
sons by Tantieme were Reliance II and his equally
talented older brother Match III, winner as a
four-year-old of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, King
George and Queen Elizabeth S. and Washington D.C.
International. Relance did equally well when mated to
                    Tantieme
=s son Tanerko, producing Relko, winner of the
2000 Guineas in France and the Derby in England.
This was clearly a very potent combination, so the
addition of an extra line to Tantieme, via King
                    =s Best=s
dam, must surely have appealed to Moonlady
                    =s owners.
Although Eishin Flash is by a miler, there is enough
stamina in his pedigree to suggest that he will stay well
enough to challenge for the Japanese St Leger and the

First winner for Coolmore sire Brian Boru

                          By George Kimberley4.29PM 2 DEC 2009

COOLMORE'S Brian Boru got his career as a jumps sire off to the best possible start when his first runner won on Wednesday.
The Lucinda Russell-trained three-year-old gelding, named Bold Sir Brian, won the junior bumper at Ayr and is from the first crop of the Racing Post Trophy and St Leger-winning sire. Bred by Heinz Polleimer, he is the sixth foal out of the former Galway hurdle winner Black Queen.
James Ewart's Zaru was backed down to favouritism, but could finish only third, with the Alflora gelding Darna going down fighting in second.
Brian Boru was bred by Juddmonte Farms out of their Park Hill Stakes winner Eva Luna. He stood the past season at €2,500 under the Coolmore jumps banner at the Beeches Stud in Ireland.

                            WORKFORCE (3 c King's Best-Soviet Moon by Sadler's Wells)
                            Breeder: Juddmonte Farms
ONE of the key aspects of Juddmonte Farms' success as the breeder of top-class horses has been its nurturing of its own families.
And Workforce is from a family it has had in its stud book since 1984, when the Derby/Arc hero's third dam Media Luna was purchased.
Oaks placed herself, Media Luna is a half-sister to another mare who fits that billing in Suni. She is also granddam of Flute, a daughter of Seattle Slew who won the Kentucky Oaks and Alabama Stakes for Khalid Abdullah in 2001.
Workforce's dam is an unraced sister to St Leger winner Brian Boru, Listed winner Kitty O'Shea, and Gr3-placed winner Kushnarenkovo.
His sire King's Best has had a notable year as his son EishinFlash won the Japanese Derby, the Tokyo Yushun. Group 3 winner Simon de Montfort, off the course since Aprl, is another 2010 stakes winner for the son of Kingmambo.
