Ich hoffe, dass meine Einschaetzung falsch war, und es sieht ganz danach aus - denn dieser Hengst ist phantastisch!

    High Chaparral
    coming to the fore

    By Rachel Pagones12.24PM 18 MAY 2009
PUT your ear to the ground in early spring and you can hear, distantly at first but coming closer with every major race meeting, the sound of a herd of galloping horses. They come ghostlike in the fog of races not yet run; but by now, mid-May, they are rounding into view. They are shaping a line, or lineage you might say; son to sire to grandsire.

We should know this herd of horses by now, or at least the sire and grandsire part of it. For three of the last four years, the grandsire has been Sadler's Wells, led by Galileo and Montjeu, sire in turn of last year's Derby hero New Approach and the victors of 2007 and 2005, Authorized and Motivator.

This spring another son has joined the line-up - High Chaparral, whose second-crop three-year-old Golden Sword is a lively Epsom outsider after winning last week's Chester Vase from Masterofthehorse, one of his many Classic-aimed stablemates at Ballydoyle.

Masterofthehorse is by Sadler's Wells, as is Black Bear Island, a brother to High Chaparral entered in tomorrow's Dante Stakes, so don't throw the old man's chances out yet. But for a stallion who did not conceive his first Derby winner, 2001 victor Galileo, until he was 16, Sadler's Wells is leaving a remarkably swift imprint as a sire of sires on the most famous of British contests.

So swiftly did it happen that by now, with Montjeu just a 13-year-old and Galileo a mere 11-year-old - they conceived these crops at nine and seven years of age - it is no longer news. It seems more newsworthy to say that half of the six horses at the head of the ante-post Derby market are by other stallions.
High Chaparral, however, is a new factor. Along with Golden Sword, the ten-year-old is responsible for an early spate of stakes horses this season, including the four-year-olds Magadan and Winkle, first and third in the Group 3 Prix d'Hedouville at Longchamp this month, and the Feilden Stakes winner Redwood at the Craven meeting.

Incidentally, all but Golden Sword are out of mares from the Raise A Native line, but it is too small a sample to be worth anything other than raising a note about for future reference.
High Chaparral, winner of the 2002 Derby double and back-to-back Breeders' Cup Turf races, entered stud at Coolmore in 2004, the year Montjeu was in his fourth season and Galileo in his third. Those are tough years for any stallion, even one with Coolmore's support, and Galileo's fee had been dropped to €40,000, from €60,000 the previous season, while Montjeu's remained at €30,000. High Chaparral entered stud with a fee of €35,000.

The relatively close fees and similarly eminent race records raise a question: did High Chaparral cause a diversion of some of the best mares fromthese two in his first two seasons at stud, and if so was it significant enough to give him an advantage with his current three- and four-year-old crops? Or on the contrary, did the older stallions gain an early edge?

The accompanying table gives a snapshot of the books for all three stallions when this year's crop of four-year-olds was conceived. The three-year-olds have only just begun, so it would not be useful to analyse their results yet.

Clearly the best group of performers went to Galileo, who also had the largest book at 159. Six of his mares were Group 1 winners, compared to two Group 1 winners for Montjeu and none for High Chaparral. Seven per cent of Galileo's mares were Group winners, compared to six per cent for Montjeu and four per cent for High Chaparral. A full 17 per cent of Galileo's book were stakes winners, in contrast to 15 per cent for Montjeu and 11 per cent for High Chaparral.

    AND HIGH CHAPARRAL2004 Mares

When it comes to the mares' production records, though, High Chaparral would seem to have the advantage. Five per cent of his book were producers of Group 1 winners, compared to four per cent for Galileo and only two per cent for Montjeu. As for producers of Group stakes winners, there were 33 per cent in High Chaparral's book, 26 per cent in Galileo's, and 19 per cent in Montjeu's.
There was a mitigating factor, however - High Chaparral also had the highest percentage of unraced mares, 22 per cent, compared to 20 per cent for Galileo and 15 per cent for Montjeu.

Looking at the race results for the foals born in 2005, Galileo easily comes out on top, with three Group 1 winners, seven per cent Group winners and 11 per cent stakes winners. Montjeu has two Group 1 winners, five per cent Group winners and 7.5 per cent stakes winners - standing about two percentage points above High Chaparral in these categories. Notably, the percentage of winners for all three stallions was between 45 and 47 per cent.

There are many other parameters to consider, such as the age of the mares - some of the best producers go to promising young stallions late in life, which means they are not in their prime in terms of the very important uterine environment or fertility. The other questions raised include: is it more advantageous, on average, breeding an unproven stallion to young high-class runners or to older, high-class producers?

For the moment, though, one thing looks clear. Galileo's and Montjeu's fees are both private this year, but they last stood at published fees of €150,000 in 2007 (Galileo) and €125,000 in 2008 (Montjeu). High Chaparral has done enough with what he's had to lookgood value as a sire of Derby types at this year's fee of €10,000.

Second Group One Winner for High Chaparral
            (24th October 2009)

A horse that does not technically turn three until November 10 has won Australia’s ultimate weight-for-age contest the Group One MVRC WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday– ironically the youngest horse in the race, So You Think (3c High Chaparral x Triassic, by Sir Tirstram), prepared by the oldest trainer in Bart Cummings.

Having just his fifth race start, So You Think was ridden by accomplished big race rider Glen Boss, who allowed the son of High Chaparral to stride forward and lead on the first run down the straight.

The move proved a winning one, as the supremely talented colt relaxed and settled into his stride and from that point was never seriously challenged in carving out the 2040 metres in a slick 2:03.98.

Fellow three year-old Manhattan Rain (3c Encosta de Lago x Shantha's Choice , by Canny Lad) was gallant in defeat filling second place two and a half lengths back, while veteran eight year-old Zipping (8g Danehill x Social Scene, by Grand Lodge) again jagged a minor placing in third after finishing second last year.

“I’m very pleased for Bossy, I encouraged him to ride the horse. I said don’t worry about the wasting, I’ll buy you a feed after and he’s done a good job,” Cummings said.

“It’s unusual to have a horse at this standard so early in his career but I think he has a good future ahead of him.

“Taj Rossi was the best three-year-old I’ve had, but he’s up with the better ones.”

Taj Rossi won the Cox Plate in 1973 and then went on to win the Victoria Derby, George Adams Handicap (now Emirates Stakes) and Sandown Guineas that spring, but So You Think faces a far easier assignment with just the Group One VRC Emirates Stakes still on his dance card.

A $110,000 purchase for DGR Thoroughbreds from the Windsor Park Stud draft at the 2008 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, So You Think is raced by long time Cummings client and friend Dato Tan Chin Nam in partnership with Tunku Ahmad Yahaya.

The star colt has won three of five starts earning $2,075,850 in prizemoney during his brief career to date which kicked off with a debut win at Rosehill on May 20.

Questioned by TVN’s Bruce Clarke as to what attracted him to So You Think as a yearling, Bart Cummings offered the following assessment, “You’ve seen him haven’t you?... He had a deep girth and a good rein, if you have an eye for a horse you couldn’t have missed him.”

Bred by NZ based hobby breeder Cecile Smith in partnership with Windsor Park Stud's Mike Moran, So You Think is the seventh living foal of Group Two winner Triassic, who was 16 years old when she had him and has now produced five winners, but the fact she was an older mare that had not produced a stakes-winner would have caused many yearling buyers to shy away, but not Cummings who judged the colt on face value.

Triassic has already been covered again this spring by So You Think’s sire High Chaparral

A regular shuttler to Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand, English Derby hero High Chaparral has done a great job in the Northern Hemisphere, but even better in the Southern Hemisphere where he now has two Group One winners to his credit with So You Think joining Monaco Consul (3c High Chaparral x Argante, by Star Way), winner of the AJC Spring Champion Stakes.

UND MONACO CONSUL hat mit STAR WAY von STAR APPEAL natuerlich wieder einmal deutsches Blut in den Adern:

Naechster Gr I Sieger fuer HIGH CHAPARRAL :

              MONACO CONSUL DOMINANT IN
              VICTORIA DERBY
Third Group 1 win in consecutive weeks for Bart Cummings.

              z
The race had more than its share of drama
              beforehand when the ante-post favourite
Shamoline Warrior was withdrawn in the
morning due to an elevated temperature.
His absence did not detract from an
exciting race however, writes Darryl Sherer,
as Monaco Consul won the classic on just
his sixth start and stamped himself an
              exciting middle-distance prospect.
Waited with off the early speed set by
              Patinack stablemates Onemorenomore
              and Gathering, Monaco Consul was
always travelling strongly and he was
looking ominous some way out, poised
to challenge as heads turned for home.
Viking Legend momentarily got his nose
in front 250m out but once Corey Brown
turned Monaco Consul loose there was
really only going to be one winner.
              Letting down powerfully, Monaco Consul
ran to the front with 150m to travel and he
went to the line two and a quarter lengths
clear of Extra Zero (Danzero), who valiantly
tried to go with the winner but could not
match his acceleration, with a very game
Viking Legend (Elvstroem) staying on for
              third.
The race time of 2.41.68 was relatively
pedestrian but the final split was
impressive, the final 600m covered in
34.27 on the upgraded good track.
A jubilant Mike Moroney, winning the
Derby for the second time after scoring
with Second Coming in 1997, was left
shaking his head at the colt who had not
run since winning the Spring Champion
Stakes in October. “A great feeling, he just
outstayed them, it was great, really good.
You take a bit of a risk when you do not
run them for four weeks, but we thought
we knew our horse and it worked out well.
“It was a great ride, a very good ride. He
got off the fence at just the right time, and
then he ambled on him for a while before
he went for him, but he showed that turn
of foot that we know that he has got.
“It has been a good team effort from
everybody in New Zealand and Australia
and it has worked out well in the end. He’s
a lovely relaxed colt, when we got him
back from Sydney he ate two breakfasts!”
Moroney said they had also seriously
considered So You Think as a yearling from the two High Chaparral
yearlings the liked the most but had purchased Monaco Consul.
Paul Moroney signed for the colt out of the Star Way (GB) mare
Argante at NZ$100,000, out of Windsor’s 2008 yearling draft at
New Zealand Bloodstock Ltd’s Premier Sale at Karaka and he
is the second Group 1 winner in as many weeks for the Epsom
Derby winner that shuttles to Windsor Park Stud. “He’s a stallion
we need in this part of the world, no shadow of a doubt,” Moroney
said in something of an understatement. “We’re lucky, we’ve got
              half a dozen of them.”
Jockey Corey Brown was impressed. “He’s just perfect, gee he’s
good,” he said. “I didn’t wanna stir him up early, didn’t wanna get
there too soon either He’s got a big future!”
Raced by Gerard Peterson’s GG Syndicate and Owen Glenn,
Monaco Consul has won three of his six starts and placed second
once. His earnings now total $1,091,355.

High Heeled: scores for her underrated sire

                    By Tony Morris1.16PM 8 NOV 2009
                    High Heeled
3 b f High Chaparral - Uncharted Haven (Turtle Island)
OCTOBER 24 was a red-letter day for Coolmore stallion High Chaparral, who had major winners in two hemispheres. Down under the headline maker was So You Think, a lightly raced colt who led from start to finish in Australia's top weight-for-age event, the Cox Plate, run at Moonee Valley in Melbourne.
Opposed by many of the nation's star performers, the son of NZ Group 2 winner Triassic was having only his fifth career start and was still nearly three weeks short of his actual third birthday, but he scored in fine style to earn recognition as the interim leader of his generation.

So You Think, trained by octogenarian Bart Cummings, is the second southern hemisphere Group 1 winner for his sire, whose son Monaco Consul scored his big win in the recent Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick, while we still await High Chaparral's first top-level victory in Europe.

Somewhat overshadowed here by his senior stud companions and paternal half-brothers Montjeu and Galileo, he has not been favoured with the abundance of high-quality mares that have featured on their visitors' lists, and his availability last spring at the reduced fee of only €10,000 was not calculated to help him in that regard, but there is a growing perception that he may have been under-rated. It is no mean feat to get a Classic-placed daughter in each of his first two crops.
The first of those gifted fillies was Unsung Heroine, produce of a slow maiden by the poor sire Tenby. She won the Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes at Cork on her second appearance in public, and followed with an excellent performance as runner-up to Conduit in the St Leger. On her only subsequent outing she confirmed her class by chasing home Crystal Capella in the Group 2 Pride Stakes at Newmarket.
The other filly with a Classic place to her name is High Heeled, who actually improved on her showing as third in the Oaks with her spreadeagling performance in Saturday's Group 3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury. Bought as a yearling for 110,000gns at Tattersalls, she is surely set to fetch a significantly higher price when she returns there for her date at the December Sales.
High Heeled did not give too many hints of what was to come in her first season in spite of her Newmarket debut second to Rainbow View; she was well beaten that day. Her only victory came on the all-weather at Kempton, but that was also the case with her stablemate Ghanaati, who was to win the 1,000 Guineas on her first venture on turf.
High Heeled's last run of 2008 was in the Goffs Fillies' Million, and she actually posted her best RPR of the season in that event, but that was only 85, and her sixth place, five lengths behind the winner, could hardly inspire extravagant ideas about what she might achieve at three.
However, it was reasonable to suppose that a daughter of High Chaparral would be likely to improve in her second season, and High Heeled has certainly done that. Also predictably, longer distances have proved a significant factor in her progress.
She began her campaign in a 1m2f conditions event at Newbury in April, when she came with a sustained run to get on top in the last furlong and stayed on well to beat some smart colts, including subsequent Pattern winners in Father Time and Palavicini.
On that form she might have been expectedto figure prominently in the Group 3 Musidora Stakes, but she turned in her dullest effort of the season, beaten over ten lengths into fourth place behind Sariska, but that performance is something that we can now ascribe to the fast ground at York.
High Heeled has demonstrated since that she needs good or softer conditions to display her true merit. Written off as a 33-1 shot for the Oaks, run on good ground, she acquitted herself well with a new personal best, finishing under three lengths behind Sariska and Midday, with Rainbow View in fourth place.
On the strength of her Epsom performance High Heeled was a hot favourite for the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks, but the storm which eased the going at Haydock that day came an hour too late for her. With the ground still riding fast, she could make no headway when she came off the bridle and dead-heated for third place as the enigmatic Barshiba powered home to a ready victory.
High Heeled has been better than that in all four of her more recent races. She had more than two lengths to spare over Ave when taking the Listed Lyric Stakes at York, ran a creditable fifth behind Midday over the inadequate trip of the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, and at Newmarket earlier in October she gave her best display on fast ground, when only three lengths behind the near-dead-heaters Ashalanda and Crystal Capella in the Pride Stakes.
If High Heeled was able to recover from that effort only seven days earlier, the St Simon Stakes had to give her a splendid opportunity to open her Pattern account, and after the heavens opened over Newbury the odds of 4-1 represented a steal.
Revelling in the heavy ground, she was clearly goingbest a long way from home, and once she had assumed command two furlongs out, it was just a matter of how far she would win. It turned out to be six lengths, and a new best RPR of 117 allows the belief that, given the underfoot conditions she requires, she is a match for any filly in the country over 1m4f, barring her Epsom conquerors, Sariska and Midday.
It will be fascinating to discover whether she is purchased for further racing or just as a broodmare prospect when she has her date as Lot 1403 at the December Sales. There is reason to suppose that she might improve again as a four-year-old, but it seems more likely that she will be bought for stud purposes.
High Heeled certainly offers plenty of appeal as a broodmare. She is the third produce of her dam, Uncharted Haven, who won once as a juvenile at Longchamp before her acquisition at the 1999 Arc sale by clients of California-based trainer Bobby Frankel.
Over the next two years, the daughter of Turtle Island established herself among the best of her sex on grass, collecting Grade 2 wins in the San Clemente and San Gorgonio Handicaps and earning places in three other races at the same level.
High Heeled comes from the increasingly conspicuous family tracing to 1963 juvenile filly champion Mesopotamia, whose other prominent descendants this year include Rip Van Winkle and Mastery.

                      Descarado gives Waterhouse first Cup

                      By AAP RAcing/mark ryan 6:45AM 16 OCT 2010
                      Report: Australia, Saturday

Caulfield: BMW Caulfield Cup (Group 1 hcap)
                      1m4f, turf, 3yo+
Gai Waterhouse was bubbling over with excitment when she landed her first Caulfield Cup win with the gutsy Descarado who endured a tough run but refused to give up in the $2.5 million race.
Waterhouse, who landed her 100th Group One winner earlier this month with Herculian Prince in The Metropolitan at Randwick, has been trying to win the 2400m Caulfield Cup, one of Australia's top four races, for many years.
Her father, the legendary Tommy Smith, won the Caulfield Cup four times, and Waterhouse had run second with Aqua D'Amour in 2006 and third with Iron Horse in 1996.
OnSaturday the stable saddled up Herculian Prince ($9, ninth) and the lesser fancied Descarado ($17).
The four-year-old, by So You Think's sire High Chaparral, had some good form to recommend him including a second to another High Chaparral gelding, Shoot Out, in the AJC Australian Derby at Randwick last autumn.
Two starts ago he won the Group Two Hill Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill.
Ridden by Chris Munce, the gelding was trapped wide from barrier 15 but kept finding under pressure to hold out New Zealander Harris Tweed ($17) by a length with Monaco Consul ($21) 1-1/4 lengths away third.
Putting in a great Melbourne Cup trial to finish strongly for fourth was reigning Melbourne Cup winner Shocking ($4.60 fav) who had to shoulder topweight of 57kg on the heavy (9) track.

                              SO YOU THINK JUST SUPER
Anyone in any doubt that So You Think (High Chaparral) is the best
racehorse in Australia or New Zealand right now should have been
silenced by yesterday’s display in the L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes (Gr
1, 2000m). Indeed, after yesterday, there are many in Australia
prepared to bet that So You Think is the best horse in the World.
Of course, talk is cheap, but if the knowing glances from the
many international visitors, huddled together beneath the canopy
outside the weighing room are anything to go by, then maybe, just
maybe, the hyperbole is not misplaced.
In deteriorating conditions and driving rain, So You Think was able
to settle in fourth place and he was poised to challenge turning
for home. Descarado (High Chaparral) was about to master longtime
leader Ginga Dude (Istidaad) but Steven Arnold had yet to
get busy on So You Think, who eased alongside Descarado with
                              300 metres to go
The instant acceleration from last week’s Cox Plate was not there,
but neither was the urgency from the saddle, and So You Think
drew away to score comfortably. Descarado ran his heart out and
kept second place in front of an equally game Ginga Dude.
“He’s won rain hail or shine it doesn’t seem to matter to him,” a
wet but smiling Reg Fleming, Flemington foreman for trainer Bart
                              Cummings, said afterwards.
“You like to see them hitting the line really good and today he did
that. This was just normal work we do with the stayers, Bart’s got
a system in place and we follow that and the fruit is in what you’ve
                              seen today.
“He amazes me this horse. I don’t know what he can do. He’s a
good doer, a strong horse and I don’t think it will be a problem
                              (for Tuesday).
Winning jockey Steven Arnold was equally impressed. “Magic
today, I didn’t want to restrain him from the stalls and get him
cranky early on so I let him stride a little bit through the first
furlong and then he got a nice rhythm and let a couple go and he
just cantered in the run.” said Arnold.
“I only wanted go down the last two (furlongs, 400m) strong, but
those weight-for-age races they’ve been making it a bit of a test
                              because he’s the best horse.
“Today I just wanted to wait a bit longer and he actually had a look
around at the furlong, he’s an awesome horse.
“He seems to have pulled up great. He’s pulled up super in
himself; he was jumping around coming in so I don’t think it’s hurt
him too much. I’m a little bit concerned about the two miles and
probably still am but that was a real positive today. He relaxed so
well and was so strong late. I reckon today was a real positive,”
                              he said.
“What you see is what you get. It was a very authoritative win
again and speaks well for Tuesday.” Duncan Ramage, racing
manager for part-owner Dato Tan Chin Nam, said.
So You Think (4 h High Chaparral – Triassic, by Tights) has now
won eight of his 11 starts and has earned $5,284,300.

So You Think team deny pre-Cup sale rumours

SO YOU THINK will run as favourite in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup for Bart Cummings and Dato Tan Chin Nam - despite reports the champion had been sold to an international stud.
So You Think tuned up for the Melbourne Cup with an authoritative victory in Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes, his fifth Group 1 victory from just 11 starts.

Rumours surfaced throughout the afternoon the four-year-old had been the subject of a huge offer which included the condition he did not run in the Cup, but Dato Tan's racing manager Duncan Ramage said he would definitely line up.

"There has been a lot of interest in him for some time," Ramage said.
"But he will run in the Melbourne Cup for Dato Tan Chin Nam and Tunku Ahmad Yahaya, that's the situation."
Coolmore sponsored a Group 1 event on the Victoria Derby card, while Sheikh Mohammed was also present at the meeting to watch his runners.
So You Think drew barrier three for the Cup and displaced last year's winner Shocking as favourite at $3.50 (5-2) in local betting. So You Think is 3-1 in Britain, with Shocking next best at 8-1.
