Silvano crowned South African champion sire
By Bloodstock World Staff 11:49AM 2 AUG 2013
MAINE CHANCE Farm resident Silvano has been crowned champion sire in South Africa for 2012-13.
The son of Lomitas sired five Grade 1 winners during the season, including Durban July hero Heavy Metal, who scored on the same weekend as Group 1 Deutsches Derby winner Lucky Speed.
In winning the title, Silvano replaces perennial champion Jet Master who died in 2011 after contracting West Nile virus and developing complications. Silvano finished the season with total prize-money R5 million (£329,493/€378,013) in excess of second-placed Jet Master.
Silvano, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup and Arlington Million, stood for two seasons at his owner Andreas Jacobs' Gestut Farhof before relocating to Maine Chance Farm, returning to Germany for one season in 2009 during which time he sired Lucky Speed.
Members of his previous South African crops include Classic winners Kings Gambit and Happy Spirit.
