    Dear Matekk!

What you are reporting on the training of a horse at this degree of schooling is common. It deals with the lately occurance of the natural crookedness because of the horse is not constant enough in his longitudinal axis what means that it is not even bended on both reins. It is crooked. Therefore it is slipping into a faulty half pass. You are to go back to the roots. At first you should refer to The German Guidelines of Riding Volume I (scale of schooling) and Volume II (chapter 1.3.5 and 1.3.6). Then you will see that to straighten up the horse at this point is the most important goal to achieve. Secondary you are to improve the carrying power of the hindlegs. The keyexercises for all this are shoulderin and countershoulderin (on the circle too). I impute you know how to di this. Don’t work towards the change of leg in the canter until it is sure that the horse is really well bended on both reins and constant in that. It has to be really well balanced. Then you should start to develope the single change of leg in canter to perfection and the counter canter in a collected pace too. Once you will have achieved this do the same with the single flying change. At the end of this stage the horse must be able to create a really good single change at any place and any line of the dressage arena. You now can start with the flying changes at a definite number of strides. Begin at the wall and decide before starting the exercise after how much strides you want to change. It is recommended to have a change after 6 –8 strides in the beginning. The main goal is the quality of the changes. When you cut down the number of strides the quality of the changes has always to be consistent. If this is given you can step further to the flying change at every stride. If you do so I am sure you will succeed. Helpfully could be to have a assistant on the ground to tell you what the horse does because the rider can’t see and feel everything. But mention of the written above that it is only one way and many ways are leading to Rome.

    Kind regards

Thank You for response :-)It is difficult to me to understand why Kontusz has still problem with 3,2 time changes and do very good pi-pa tour(especially piaff is loosnes and dynamic) and do good gallop pirouetes in both sides and zig-zag travesal in canter.if he do single changes he is straight and cool.Could You tell me particular exercises to improve straightness(in case of escaping travesal to right past changing leg to right?? )
      with best regards matekk

        Dear Matekk!

I am not sure I understand you. Am I right if I say you mean Kontusz steps too much to the right with his hindlegs after changing leg from left to right? I impute that’s the difficulty you are dealing with. Ensure the following indispensable requirements: as much strength of the haunches as possible (good fitness); rhythm has to be well established in all paces and tempi, remaining undisturbed in every situation; real stepping forward to the bit (you shouldn’t use the curb bit in exercising but the simple snaffle bit); genuine looseness and suppleness; good impulsion at your level without affecting one of the three points named before; real straightness (no compromises possible except such that are well-founded in the horse’s anatomy); good ability to collect with a maximum of permeability to the aids and no lack of impulsion. I impute you know what is to be done to impound all these attributes. Starting canter from the walk and the halt will be helpfull. Just as the lateral work. Shoulderin and Plié on both hands, travers on the left and renvers on the right hand. You yourself in a first phase should ride without spurs but with two whips, on each side one. This equipement gives you some advantages: you must really use your calf and senstive the horse for it. The two whips will help you to straighten the horse and will maintain impulsion in a better way than spurs do. Improve your seat to be really supple. It has to be certain that both calfs are working with the same strength. It might be that your left leg in case of change is acting too strong and therefore Kontusz steps to the right. When you use the curb bit don’t devide the rains 2:2 but 3:1! That softens your hand and decreases the risk to lock with the outer rain of the curb. Another possible reason why your horse becomes crooked in changing the canter. Make sure that the transitions between the single exercises, e. g. renvers – half circle – shoulderin, are fluent and harmonic. Listen to your horse: avoid any overtaxing of Kontusz. Develope a really good basis of skills and abilities of you and him. If you are not certain that he is well prepared to perform a special exercise step back. The most important principle in schooling horse and rider is to proceed from the ease to the difficult. You always should take note of that and should not think in exercises you are to show at the tournement. These exercises are only the consquence of good schooling but not the reason why we school. We are schooling because we want to have a healthy, handsome, submissive horse that walks in good self-carriage for a long period of time. By the way, if you don’t, you should work together with a good trainer. It makes things much more easier. All the best for you and Kontusz.

        Kind regards
